Does anybody know of a Canadian beer of the month club-style organisation?

I looked into it, there doesn't seem to be anything viable right now.

I guess a good follow up question would then be; does anyone know what the laws are concerning the mail order purchase of beer from one of the Provinces that allows non-governmental sales?

The liquor laws are a real mess in Canada, aren't they? Should be standardised.

You can't ship any alcohol into Ontario without it going through an importer and the LCBO. Private beer purchases made out of province risk seizure if shipped via mail, courier or other form of shipment.

The only way around the law is to have a friend or relative (or yourself) bring beer from other parts of the country when visiting (or returning). Every time I travel throughout Canada I bring a bunch of stuff home in my suitcase.

Oh dear God no. Then we'd end up with a Liquor Control Board of Canada and a national Monopoly instead of several provincial ones that sold Blue and Canadian exclusively. Of course, Quebec would be allowed to opt out as a distinct Société des alcools.

Technically I believe even having someone bring it to you from another province is illegal. I know it is illegal to transport into NS, NB, or PEI from another province, and it's not a volume limit it is just illegal, period. Not sure if all provinces have that rule. It is of course, virtually impossible to enforce such a law, so it mostly only enforced in cases where the volume of alcohol is enough that bootlegging or smuggling is suspected.

I think while it's not 'illegal' to bring beer in your car across the ON/PQ border, it is still technically subject to taxes. Luckily our provincial borders are open

PEI, where I used to live, had TV ads from the Province about "smuggling" purchases of goods from outside the province and I had a pal stopped at the Bridge and the car searched for contraband - which included beer. Fortunately, they had just brought in a 24 limit for free import.

But people are basically nuts in PEI when it comes to this stuff. Best comment on that: "they are too insular to be xenophobic."

WOW so you could order from Belgianshop overseas and they just seize it?

It would be great if they could allow each Ontarian a few hassle-free mail imports a year, in the name of keeping things simple. It's wasteful for Ontario to chase after all this small shit every single time. I drive way out to some suburban mall to pay a dollar or two of duty on a book - It just ain't THAT important and they're being such wankers over this sort of thing.

Not to play devil's advocate but...

Alcohol is a controlled substance which is linked to the death of hundreds (if not thousands) of Canadians each year. It is also illegal for minors and the government control its importation more carefully as a result. The laws are also in place to protect the government monopoly on liquor distribution amd taxation. Allowing individuals to bring in "a few hassle-free mail imports a year" is far too vague and general to be workable for them. Books are generally not in the same category as they pose less risk. However, if you were importing German barely legal porn books the government might be more interested in inspecting and seizing those too.

Rather than fighting for the government to allow some hassle free private importation a more realistic goal would be to lobby for private retail importation. Then some entrepreneur could open a boutique store, bring in product they thought they could sell and perhaps even take private orders for customers like yourself. The LCBO would still want their cut and to impose their other regulations but at least we wouldn't be beholden to the LCBO's strange, quixotic seasonal release selections and their habit of alienating quality brewers around the globe.
