Was going through my bottle closet, getting rid of some empties that I've been using for homebrewing but are getting a little worn out, when I found an LCBO receipt from September 30 2005:
Dogfishhead Chicory Stout - $1.95
I just twish to hell I could remember what it tasted like |

I'll let you know - I've still got one or two in the cellar. I'll crack one open this week sometime. No idea how it'll have aged.

| I still have one too and, frankly, I wasn't a fan. If you want to trade something for it, PM me. Full disclosure: it's been "cellared" in my refrigerator for two years. |

It's a pretty pedestrian effort as far as stouts go IMO. Not bad, just not great. _________________ Uncle Len gets the job done every time. |

I had a few bottles left in my cellar and they had both turned. Badly. I tried them a couple of months ago and ended up flushing them down the drain. They opened with a loud pop, loads of head when poured but it was just pure funky beer
Yours may be different but I just don't think this beer is heavy enough for ageing. _________________ Illegitimus Non Tattus Carborundum |

5.2% and 22 IBU's...what is it with some bartowellers who want to whine about old beer they have in their cellars/closets/fridges? beeradvocate.com gives it a respectable rating of 3.74 so there are a lot of people out there who think it's decent, not great, but certainly respectable. Again, not going out of my way to pick a fight here but people dredging old crap out of their cellars and then wanting to speculate or comment on the beer is getting a little tired...DRINK FRESH UNLESS IT'S HIGH ALCOHOL AND BOTTLE-CONDITIONED...I have some rotten green peppers in my fridge but I'll not share the experience with you and by inference blame the farmer...please don't share your rotten beer experiences with us as I can't imagine what the rest of your fridge or closet must look like..portobello mushrooms anyone? I thought we put this to bed already....let's start a thread about the old underwear you found under your beer in the closet and how it's ripened over the years...makes about as much sense as this thread.
Sorry for the rant....tomorrow is Mother's Day and it is a very trying day for me...she drives me crazy and it's always about not jumping across the table and strangling her...bottom line is I don't drink 3 year old crap I find in my basement...why do you? |

Do these cows have not pride in their product? Gotta remember to return the carton for a refund...what's that...ladies thongs...how the $*#@ did they get in there? Really need to clean house more often. |

Welcome Back Pete, I thought you'd gone all sensible and conformist for a while there
I guess there are still a lot of people out there who need educating about beer. But it's always easier to Piss & Moan and blame others instead of yourself, isn't it? _________________ Illegitimus Non Tattus Carborundum |

Makes sense to me. I'm with Peter here.
Now, I don't think these beer were aged on purpose, but aged they were. Beer is meant to be drank fresh unless it is High ABV, Bottle Conditioned, etc. _________________ Uncle Len gets the job done every time. |

Yeah, I'm not really expecting much out of it. I just noticed a couple of weeks ago that I still had one in there, and when somebody happened to bring it up, I thought I'd try it sometime this week.
I'm well aware that this type of beer isn't likely to have aged well - I sure didn't age it on purpose. Sometimes one or two non-ageworthy beers just happen to get stuck in a box with some more ageworthy ones, and found a couple of years later. Can't say as I've had any great surprises (i.e. nothing that's improved that I didn't expect to), but the odd one is still relatively drinkable when I end up pulling it out. Live and learn.

And, for the record, nobody was whining in this thread. It was about an old receipt somebody found, not an old beer, and a few people chimed in to say that they'd had a couple of old samples that hadn't aged very well.
Nobody was complaining, just agreeing that this probably wasn't a good aging candidate.

Good points! Aging / losing / re-finding some old bottles of beer is just part of being an avid 'beer hunter.' Discussion of samples that have aged (for better or worse) will come up here often, and people might like to just frame their comments by mentioning the 'well past expiry' status of the beer in question.
A newer BarToweller might also want to know 95% of beer just doesn't age well. In fact newer beer hunters would be better off not cellaring much beer at first - but rather buy small amounts regularly from very fresh sources, and then DRINK it. There will always be more Seasonal releases & there's no need to buy truckloads of something just because may be a "fringe" of people on BT who may fill their rafters with IPAs and Porters. You don't want to be looking at your 6 cases of expired IPA some months later on!! _________________ In Beerum Veritas ... You haven't got something a little less...eh...ducky, have you? |

| Whining, complaining, commenting on the obvious...it's all the same...OLD BEER GENERALLY BAD UNLESS HIGH ABV or BOTTLE CONDITIONED...we all agree...so keep on posting your experiences with 5% beer that's been in your closet for 2 or 3 years as everyone is fascinated by such threads...for every such post I'll post about my vegetable and milk experiences although you don't have to read them but I'll put them up just to annoy you...made it through Mother's Day without throttling the old woman...she was actually somewhat pleasant...but that's a whole other story. I am this way because of my parents so don't blame me....I have no control over the situation. |

I recently got a six pack of Victory Hop Devil in Illinois without checking the dates on them. They were six months past expiry. They were a shadow of their former selves. One bottle was very off. The rest were drinkable and at least I got a taste of the Victory brewery's hops I love so much.
On the DFH Chicory Stout. From what I remember the quality was there but Chicory is not my thing so I didn't much enjoy them. Happily the DFH 60min IPA will get here soon. A much better brew and I shouldn't have to drink expired IPAs again.
I did get a whole bunch of Three Floyd's Dreadnaught right from the Brewery last month. I should get a year out of them I hope. |
