I'm heading to Montreal soon with friends. Since we'll have a car this time it has been suggested that we try and visit one of the breweries. Can anyone here provide a recommendation (we really only need to see one)? I'd love to visit Chambly/Unibroue, but I've read the BT article and it says there are no tours. We're really just looking for an excuse to get outside of the city (though not too far) and see something different (and beer-related).

Fred from Hopfenstark is a super nice guy and would likely give you quite the tour - but I myself have not been out to the actual brewery. Maybe someone can chip in who has?

If you head out to Chambly there is Fourquet Fourchette and Bedons de Dondaines (or something like that out there.) I did a drive by of Unibroue when I went there. Just a whip through of the parking lot but it was neat to see it.

There are a bunch of cideries driving distance from Montreal as well.

The Dieu du Ciel microbrewery is north of Montreal in St Jerome, but I haven't been so I'm not sure if there is any reason to go there instead of the bar in the city - I'm curious though if anyone knows more.

Another "must drink" beer and food destination is "Le Trou du Diable".
They are located in Shawinegan 1-1/2 hr NE of Montreal or 1 hr NE of
Hopfenstark. Very cool local and the food is to die for plus the beer is excellent.

If your interest in DdC St jerome is to see a good microbrewery, for sure visit. But if you just want to taste the beers, go to the brewpub. By law, the beer brewed at the pub cannot be sold at the micro but the reverse is legal.
So there are usually 15 beers on tap at the Montreal pub and there might be 6 taps at St Jerome.

Heading there in a couple weeks. Been to Hopfenstark before - It's a slight ways out of town buried in the suburb of L'Assomption. Lots of samples on tap!
