Re: Ontario Announces First Winning Bidders for Sale of Beer in Grocery Stores

I really did contemplate submitting a bid with a grocery store idea. But it was clear that they wanted real stores, and the rules imposed (size of store, etc.) prohibited the type of place I'd want to open (a small neighbourhood store, a la Publican Quality Meats in Chicago). It's classic Ontario, ...

Re: Ontario Announces First Winning Bidders for Sale of Beer in Grocery Stores

To be eligible to sell beer, each grocery store must meet a number of characteristics: Location sells a full line of food products; A minimum of 10,000 square feet of retail space is occupied by food products; and Location is not primarily considered a pharmacy. gee, i wonder if the macros behind T...

Re: What're you drinking right now?

a few beers last night: Great Lakes/Biergotter Nazgul Imperial Porter (my last bottle, and still tasting mighty hoppy for being almost 4 years old) Three Floyds Dark Lord 2010 (think I enjoyed the Nazgul more...) Firestone Walker 18 (tasty, but looking forward to the latest blend with no hoppy beers...

ephemere pomme, since there wasn't much in the fridge. still not a bad lunch beer, though i don't know that the pairing with a roast beef sandwich and bugles was an ideal choice...

Re: Cask Days 2015

i also assume that most ontario breweries force carb and few bottle condition. so there are no real carbonation challenges. it's a bright tank and CO2. not hard. casks require skill and up to ONE WEEK of patience and lead time. hah. but really, you need to rack to the cask, prime, let it start to r...

Re: Cask Days 2015

overcarbonation happens more than you think. i've heard of casks exploding/gushing. the soft wood allows some permeability, so you can kind of get fermentation equilibrium. you want it to be at the point where you open the spile (or whatever the fuck it's called) and 3-10 seconds later, you get foa...

maybe they should have gone with eskimo brothers. not sure what the logo would be, but i'm betting it'd be more interesting!

Re: Cask Days 2015

i'm a n00b at it. attempting it for the first time. but it was my impression that the soft wood was to account for overcarbonation. once you were at the right level, you hammered in the hardwood Yep, that's more or less how i understand it. It still shouldn't change how you prime and may help if th...

Re: Cask Days 2015

I don't buy that conditioning a cask is an easy feat. Most of the cask beer that I have had in Ontario doesn't hit the mark. Something about it must be tricky. Many Ontario brewers can't even bottle condition properly anyway. your second statement basically answers your first. often things are rush...

Re: Cask Days 2015

not that easy. there's the soft and hardwood spires i wasn't saying that hypothetically - it's worked fine for every one i've ever done. spiles have more to do with serving than conditioning. if you overcarbonate / undercarbonate, the spile can be somewhat used to compensate for that (more for over...

Re: Cask Days 2015

the other problem? carbonation. i had to read a bunch of webpages and watch tutorials on how to carbonate cask beer. i then made a step by step spreadsheet on what to do and it still didn't make total sense. i think we have a grasp on how to cask carbonate/condition, but we'll see. and if it's tapp...

that was the brewery having a little fun with the beer geek community, not actually what was in those barrels. ;)

Re: Anyone brought a keg over from NY state lately?

yeah, my experience is any price you give them will be far above what they expect for most folks buying shitty macro lager, so they're content with little or no docs. Back when I used to road trip down to dark lord day every year, i'd often be bringing cases of stuff for trades and returning with th...

Re: Anyone brought a keg over from NY state lately?

I haven't got one lately, but I've done it 8-10x at this point - mostly from MI rather than NY, though I doubt that matters. I always tell them a volume in cases, and if they ask for more detail I tell them specifically that it's a X litre keg. never had an issue, other than sometimes paying regular...
