Damn. Not lightbulbs as well. Still, look on the bright side. I've finally dried out from yesterday. Maybe next year I'll be in Yorkville again and I'll give the place another shot.

Another place with the fuck-you attitude of pubs that don't open till the banking community has finished its day's work. Try turning up at 4:30pm when it's pissing down with rain, and see how you like the Oxley. I can understand places like the Bellwoods Brewery; I can't imagine Ossington between Du...

Winnipeg

It's February in Winterpeg so I'm not looking for a patio, but if anyone has suggestions, I'd be grateful. The last time I was there, I did most of my drinking at the King's Head, and will do again if there's nothing else that's improved since 2008.

A very nice event with some tasty beers. Congratulations to the Victory guys for putting it together; hope the new boss was happy with it.

It would appear to be the Monk's Kettle. The very early website bills the place as a 'speakeasy', presumably the first speakeasy with a website (Psssst -- tell 'em Google sent you). Someone on Yelp says they have 16 taps, though none are specified, and that apparently they will at some point have ca...

Not much at the Duke of York, and certainly no Denison's. Usually a bit of Muskoka but seldom anything I'm really looking for. I was there most recently for a family occasion; it was chosen because I had to drive afterwards and there's never much likelihood I'm going to get squiffy there.

CASK Ale Crawl 2011 - Jun 17-19

This year's CASK Ale Crawl opens today, with many casks of all sorts of ale being served in 10 pubs across this fair (as in fair-to-middling) town. See details here: http://casktoronto.wordpress.com/events/ Drink terrific beer and get your passport -- available at participating pubs -- to win valuab...

Excellent event. Unbounded praise, as always, for everyone at Black Oak/Cheshire Valley, not to mention Local 4 for the fine grub. Nice weather, good company, adequate bus.

Thanks, Len. Good advice. I dropped a letter off for the new guy on Friday and look forward to some sort of response. Might just wander down there now to do a bit of quality control. Someone has to.

Victory Cafe sold

I'm surprised that no one has posted on this subject (unless it's in a subject category I hadn't thought of), but the Victory Cafe changed hands this week. We don't know much yet about the new owner or his plans, but those of us who would earn frequent flier points in a just world are nervous, to sa...

About the EP Taylor comments about draft beer, as always Professor Gillman is on the money. Back in 1961, it's worth remembering, there were no 'pubs' as we know them, certainly not in Ontario or most of Canada. There were beverage rooms, which sold a lot of draft -- or as I prefer it, draught -- to...

Apparently not. They've already picked the TV games for the second round, though if we go to another replay who knows?

Thanks, Sid. I wound up going to the Rovers Bar on Bloor Street as it was close to home. I was able to down some Leffes at my booth while watching the game, such as it was, on my own TV screen. I looked up at one point and saw two guys actually watching poker at the bar. Garthicus pointed out that C...

Setanta

Yikes! Brighton and Hove Albion are on TV this afternoon -- a very rare event. Anyone know decent pubs in Toronto with Setanta access? Fortunately I don't think there's a lot of competition on Tuesday afternoon, mostly poker and fishing. Some might argue those are still more interesting than Brighto...
