Chapoutier Languedoc Red

Mathilde Chapoutier Sélection 2017 Grenache/Syrah

Chapoutier makes Ocultum Lapidem, an excellent Languedoc wine made with Rhône grape varieties. For lots more. This is a budget wine with some nice full black and red berry and herbs. Fruit, spice and tobacco. Decent stuff!

Abbona I Due Ricu 2016 Nebbiolo Blend

Marziano Abbona I Due Ricu Rosso 2016 Nebbiolo/Barbera/Pinot Nero Affordable semi-alternative to actual Nebbiolo Barolo wine, simply a red blend ('Rosso') with Barbera and Pinot Noir/Nero added to the main grape. A more 'everyday' wine than Barolo or Barbareso, yet one with some decent stuffing. Th...

Le Griottier Morgon 2015 (Beaujolais)

Le Griottier Morgon 2015 Gamay (Cru de Beaujolais) It's almost funny talking about a Beauj red as 'seriously structured' but this WE 93-scoring example is both one of the better Crus (Morgon) and is a 2015, reportedly the best vintage in 75 years (since 1940.) Right now this Cru Beaujolais is a bit...

Blason de Bourgogne Aligoté 2017

Blason de Bourgogne Aligoté 2017 Wow, nice white for under 20 bucks, with pure shining Aligoté grape character and evidently no oak. Starts a bit herbal and floral like you'd expect of a basic Chard Burgundy, stone fruit / apple, but it's more taut and develops a nice kind of lemon-curd acidity, go...

Greek Cabernet Sauvignon

Zacharias Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 As I expected, it's not what you'd expect from a Cab Sauv - very Greek, I guess. Starts gentle and round red berry / blueberry and plum fruit, a little sweet with spice and roasted green peppers. Then there's this swell of all this great Mediterranean stuff - miner...

What're East Enders drinking lately

Had Bellwoods Bring Out Your Dead a number of times at Only Cafe. It wasn't served freezing cold, and it's so great on tap. So world class. And had that Iron Maiden Trooper Porter, fun to try but it's highly skippable, The New 10°Lezak Lager at Godspeed is also incredible tasting even with the sligh...

Tautavel Vinrgt Marches 2015

Vignerons de Tautavel Les Vingt Marches Tautavel 2015 Syrah Blend Wow, here's a hidden gem that delivers. This red is sort of Rhône-style blend with dry-tart black fruit and mineral, spice, and dark florals. Nose is a bit short and herbal. Maybe see it it goes on clearout soon as it isn't selling t...

The A to Z of it

A to Z Wineworks Pinot Noir Here is a theoretically 'textbook' Pinot Noir for about $25 and still I'm truthfully not all that excited. It's perfectly fine, with good harmony and some nice acidity. It's my first Oregon Pinot Noir. There is black cherry and stuff. Some beetroot, some layering. What i...

Château de Nages VV Costières de Nîmes 2016

Château de Nages Vieilles Vignes Costières de Nîmes 2016 Grenache Blend Wow, what a shock coming from gentle Beaujolais to this. But under the tart and sweet black berry (blackberry, blueberry, cherry and cassis, bit of mulberry, pie spice) there is herb and touch menthol. Licorice and chocolate. F...

Domaine de La Madone Beauj-Villages 2017

Domaine de La Madone Le Perréon Beaujolais-Villages 2017 Gamay

Yup, another red Beaujolais wine. Has some berry depth, herb. Not bad, in fact you'll keep drinking it. Rounder than the Cru from Morgon, but maybe slightly less interesting. Still reasonable value.

Aviron VV Morgon Côte du Py 2014 Beaujolais

Stéphane Aviron Vieilles Vignes Morgon Côte du Py 2014 Gamay Here is a rare 5 year old Beaujolais that can age more still. Aroma is various crushed and compote berry and brioche-like yeast and dark florals. Taste opens with firm cherry-like tartness, pomegranate acidity and violets, some volcanic m...

Gaumaran Medoc

Château Gaumaran 2014 Medoc Bordeaux Shows a little herbal bell pepper and spicy / vanilla barrel oak, and black currant / black fruit compote. Really lacks weight. Somewhat thin, oxidative, dilute. The Ribeon a few days ago was a little weird at first but It developed better overall flavours and s...

Costalunga Barbera '16 nice for price

Bersano Costalunga Barbera D'Asti DOC Barbera The Barbera grape is kind of the underestimated little brother of Nebbiolo grape in Piedmont, northern Italy. Nebbiolo gathers most of the spotlight with Barolo and Barbaresco. Yet this Barbera from Asti still captures some of the bracing terroir in rea...
