this whole support for ontario wine movement pisses me off. why is wine treated like a first rate product and beer a 2nd?

edit: not that i'm against the wine movement, just that it should be an ontario beer and wine movement.

yeah don't aerate that long after pitching, i think what you're describing is rousing the yeast back into suspension. no carb after 5 days is not a big deal but here is probably where you went wrong: 1. did not pitch enough healthy yeast. a) did you use liquid yeast and not make a starter? b) did yo...

my first recipe was my own recipe and i had no clue what i was doing. the problem with brewing an unproven recipe when you're starting out is that if the beer does not turn out the way you envisioned you'll have a hard time deciphering if it was a brewing process issue or a recipe issue. i'd suggest...

:o ...I sanitized the spoon I used to stir the yeast into the wort, but not the knife I used to open the packet... there's really no need to stir the yeast into the wort, just pitch it and let it go, they'll find their way around unless you are talking about sprinkling dry yeast on top of the wort?...

if there is a thin layer of foam on the top then the yeast is doing its job. if you don't see activity in the airlock it could be that the lid is not sealed properly or you have the airlock too full of liquid and it's taking a lot longer to push a co2 bubble through. what kind of yeast did you pitch?

bleach may work, but it's SO much easier to use a no-rinse sanitizer... Star San is supposed to be no rinse right? I got a TON of foam/bubbles when I used it in my carboy... Did I add too much? No, the foam means it`s working, and increases contact time by sticking to the insides of your carboy. I ...

Re: I've think decided on my first beer...

It may sound silly, but you see, I really like gardening, I really like fresh local food, so I think I want to make a pumpkin ale with an extract, and with steeping grains, but with good fresh pumpkins (I may have to wait a couple weeks) and good fresh whole spices from the spice house in Kensingto...
