I should add one more positive note. In Vancouver it appears reasonable beers like Okanagan Pale Ale are everywhere on tap. You actually have to go out of your way to find crap like Keiths and Stella, but the Okanagan is even on draft at the White Spot (local take on Denny's). Many average bars have...

Thanks for the suggestions. I have not been to the Granville Island brewery or the Dockside in a long time. I do remember liking their lager when it was available on tap. In the can, it's not so special. Shaftsbury does a better job in this mainstream. The Yaletown brewpub has been going downhill fo...

BC Update

I’m on a short trip to Vancouver. It’s been a while since I have been out here so I decided to grab a sampler of untried (by me) locals. Here are a few biased opinions to share… 1. The BC Liquor stores make me appreciate the LCBO. Even if the ‘BO is too stupid to refrigerate it’s inventory, at least...

George, you get to join my wife in proving me blind...I scanned your list without looking at the detail (I get excited around so much beer).

So to set the record straight: Me stupid, C'est What has a fine offering of cask ales!

Sadly, my last two trips to the **BO have been greeted by an empty shelf. I hope they bring more in.
Maybe it's a sign of how popular it is and it will be better stocked. Wishful thinking, no doubt.

Thanks George,

That's the spirit! One humble request: more cask!

I notice the Great Lakes 666 is still up. I keep hearing conflicting stories; it's either ending it's season soon or going into full production/bottling. What have you heard?

I think there was a thread on this a while back, but anyway, you're right, there really aren't many stouts made in Ontario these days. A few years back, we had a few more that had at least some distribution, such as Conner's Brock's Extra Stout (Niagara) Upper Canada Hart Glatt Espresso and Glatt I...

Belgian, I just thought you were inspired by a NOW cover. 8) I will give Steam Whistle top marks for quality over variety, but there are so many good Toronto breweries. My vote also goes to Mill St. for the best - good luck on the brewpub to them, by the way! I think we can also squeeze Cameron's in...

We have plenty of solid stouts brewed in Ontario, not so many Belgian Dubbels. While you may be right about the ratio, I really think Ontario needs more good stouts. The Granite makes a great one, but distribution is only offsite. I can't think of any others that have this style well executed. If y...

O'Hara's Celtic Stout

I just discovered this little gem at the LCBO. I had never seen it before; though I'm sure the experts here have a good handle on it. Anyway, I just wanted to share this very nice stout with all of you. I particularly like the slightly bitter and refreshing quality. I also like the fact it doesn't t...

Cute, and I went out of my way to avoid a comment about mullets.

What a great thread, thanks guys! It does make me feel pretty young, but at least I now understand why the old-timer I met in NYC several years back told be why he quit drinking; someting about Ballantynes quitting making beer... Anyway, here is another question. For a while I heard a lot about macr...

Thanks Greg, the link is handy, it's great to see what we can find in other provinces when we visit. I think you should do a little due diligence on the Bow & Arrow though. In recent months I have found them to be out of cask ales all too often. Has anybody heard why their usually good selection...
