Well so much for that - via email: The Dal Archives have sealed all the Keith's and Oland's recipes and any other pertinent related info as of last week. Labatt says they were only property of Bruce Oland until he sold the company to Labatt in 1971 and therefore weren't his to donate. Labatt is real...

Nanny State strikes again

Skull shaped bottles apparently a no-no. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/food-and-wine/ontario-bans-dan-aykroyds-skull-shaped-vodka/article1573490/ In other news, it's okay for you to get drunk, so long as you're caffeinated. http://www.news1130.com/radio/news1130/article/56315--alcohol-and-ener...

If you really want to put your money where your mouth is, why not contract brew it and sell it yourself? That way you don't have to worry about your chosen brewery "messing it up" and whatever you don't sell you can just drink. Plus, I suspect that many would balk at the subjectivity in th...

Re: Problem with Ontario Market

Here there is a limited number of people willing to regularly support and go out of the way for local craft beer. With all due respect Ken, your brewery bottled what you thought was enough of an extreme beer to satisfy those limited number of people for a month, and it sold out in six or seven days...

Another poorly informed writer -- who normally writes on wine, and has a limited knowledge of beers -- chimes in at today's Metro. You cannot see it in the online edition, but the picture accompanying this item in the printed edition was the Rickard's bottle. Thank you, Molson/Coors. Presumably the...

From The Toronto Star last Friday http://tinyurl.com/24fwvum In the wake of the Star’s disclosure Wednesday that the Liquor Control Board of Ontario raised its markups by 7.5 per cent to claw back any consumer savings from the business-friendly harmonized sales tax, the government scrambled to defe...

I think LCBO has some competition in the way of bars and restaurants. I mean yes it is more expensive to drink at a bar but it is another way to drink. Um, where do bars and restaurants in Ontario buy their booze? See this has always confused me. I mean do all bars and restaurants really buy all th...

But the LCBO because it's a monopoly, has no competition so they can continue to charge whatever the hell they want. I think LCBO has some competition in the way of bars and restaurants. I mean yes it is more expensive to drink at a bar but it is another way to drink. Um, where do bars and restaura...

It's a DOUBLE tax. Pure and simple. Another good reason to shop in Buffalo! It was a worse double tax before. Without the change, businesses had to pay Provincial Sales tax on their purchases, which would have been passed on to consumers as a cost of doing business. By shifting to a value-added tax...

so breweries in the province today are still very afraid to take the next step and produce beer that is current. the Imperial Stout fad came and went with little fan fair in Ontario the IIPA fad came and went with no real examples until 2010 the Sour fad came and is fading but certainly never caugh...

Keiths was bought by Labatt in the sixties prior (I think) to Power Corp buying Labatt and only kept open because of the provincial trade restrictions. The Belgians came up with the historic IPA garbage in '95 as a means of hustling Stella and the Keiths growth was a bonus though I consider it to b...

Re: Smashbomb Atomic IPA: Flying Monkeys Craft Brewery

Yes, we will bottle it if it turns out good. We have experimented with a few new things so I'm not sure how this batch is going to turn out. P- In my limited experience, I have found citra hops in large amounts to be overly "lemony." Can you comment on how this one is? I wish I could send...

As for the original question, from an outsider's perspective, Mill Street and Denison's were the first two to pop into my head. I doubt that's really a "brand awareness" response though. Outside of Ontario on a national scale, Unibroue was my first thought. Dieu du Ciel is up there too.

Outside Ontario I would say either Keiths or Moosehead in terms of brand. Moosehead sells its beer throughout Canada, the United States, and in 15 countries around the world. They also own their own distribution arm in the U.S. and once held a solid market position down there. Both companies have v...
