Re: LCBO Winter craft beer release 2015

I see they have Lagunitas kegs too. Too bad these are all in the 60L format only....

Re: Hopcat up to 36 bars

To be fair, the atmosphere at hopcat leaves a little to be desired - but the taplist is always great and cheap and the food is extremely solid.

Re: Coming Soon to the LCBO

I'd say yes, especially for these thin gruel, C-hop dominated varieties of "session IPA" that appear to be in vogue. None of them comes anywhere close to being as satisfying as a well made English-style bitter in the same ABV range, at least for my money. Trying to think of an Ontario exa...

Re: Toronto: "Craft Beer Capital of the World"?

There's nothing that can be done at the Municipal level. Things like restaurant/bar density are not the problem. I'm struggling to think of any levers at the municipal level that would matter. Everything is at the Provincial level.

Re: New Arrivals at LCBO & TBS

Probably not. Long Dark Voyage to Uranus was priced at the same amount and it went very quickly. Also, I don't think that Girl Pants is as mediocre as you think it is. Should be interesting. I actually didn't say Girl Pants is mediocre. I've tried two distinctly different versions of it in this las...

Re: New Arrivals at LCBO & TBS

I'm with most of you on this. I grabbed a couple of sixers and I wasn't impressed. It's a good tasting beer, nice and smooth but not what I was expecting. A friend brought over Boogie Monster and Witchshark, and those were both a more pleasing hoppy beer. Yes they both are IPA's but I expected a bi...

Seems like more or less the same idea to me. The price advantage is basically the same, the grocery store cuts out the middle man by importing stuff themselves. The exclusivity advantage is pretty much locked in too, no? Anything that is going to be singularly imported is not going to be cheap - it...

I'm not up on the businesses of running a grocery store, but isn't that what they do with the PC or NoName or whatever store brands they sell? Yes, perhaps, but in the case of the "house brand" that is usually for a price advantage or an exclusivity advantage - neither of which seems to a...

I find myself wondering what is preventing grocery stores from creating their own import firms and stocking products exclusively. Leverage over the other stores and it seems like it ought to be legal. Plus, you'll have contract brewed brands. Probably nothing except that, for the size of grocery st...

new at TBS Goose Island IPA Quantity: 12 × Bottle 341 ml Price: $25.50 TBS website says this is brewed by Keith's Brewery. Is Labatt contract brewing GI IPA for the Canadian market? More US brewers showing up (mostly kegs) at TBS, Kona, Atwater, Red Hook, Stone, Ommegang. I was excited that Kona ke...

450 grocery stores and...a new tax! Yay? http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/ontario-to-sell-60-per-cent-of-hydro-one-impose-new-beer-tax/article23985721/ Best line in that article is this: Under a new agreement with the province [The Beer Store] will have to give small brewers 20 per cent...

Yeah, no kidding. The whole *point* of a growler is that you have a pint of beer you like at a pub, you fill a growler to take home with you.

selling them from the LCBO defeats the entire purpose - those kegs are going to sit, get stale, and taste like crap.

I love this: Bars and restaurants have long complained the Beer Store charged them more than the retail price for bottles, and they were not allowed to buy their beer like a consumer. About 9,000 small pubs and restaurants (who sell fewer than 250 24-packs of beer a year) will now pay the same price...

A *bit* of a letdown? Its a fucking tax grab announcement, no more no less. Enjoy your 20% of shelf space at the back of the store, craft beers!

Sure will be nice to grab a growler of Molson at the LCBO though </SARCASM>
