Sleeman up for grabs

From today's G&M : Four brewers are expected to belly up to the bar today and pitch offers for Sleeman Breweries Ltd. as the auction of the $220-million beer maker enters its final stage. The two major domestic players, Molson Coors Brewing Co. and Labatt Brewing Co. Ltd., are expected to make b...

That is amazing. I had wondered how they could find the time to put a handwritten seal on each bottle, and now I understand.

I've no objections to cans per se . If there's a choice, I'll often buy a can in preference to a bottle because they're lighter, less fragile and more readily recyclable. The canned London Pride is a great product, and there are several in my fridge. The Hockley Dark can/bottle difference is really ...

Hockley Dark

After drinking the canned version for a while, I picked up a couple of the 1 litre bottles at Summerhill. The cans are great, but seriously, these products are like chalk and cheese, aren't they? To me, the bottled version seems much richer, and with better mouth feel. I know I've asked this questio...

Will they report on this if he goes broke in a couple of years time, do you think? Like it or not, there are good reasons why rural pubs are moving in the gastropub direction - drink-driving and anti-smoking legislation in particular (not that I disapprove of either). In many cases it's a matter of ...

Yes, Liberty is an excellent beer, and pretty cheap too. The Summerhill store usually has it, but I wish it were more widely available. BeerBistro and Volo carry it, but I don't know about availability in other bars.

Beer in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance

Those of you interested in the history of brewing, particularly in Germany and the Low Countries, might appreciate this book review, from The Medieval Review. Are any Ontario micros using gruit, I wonder?

I have noticed that C'est What tends sometimes to adopt the "cool urban" stance, it is just a way some places have and I have no trouble adjusting to it. Sorry Gary, but with respect I really can't agree with much of what you've written here. You seem to be implying that any misgivings ab...

Coincidentally, my grandfather was also an RSM - he was in the HLI.

I love soccer and I go to pubs to watch it but I just accept that the pubs showing it will have inferior beer and usually bad food OR a terrible atmosphere in which to watch the game...such is life. ... Although I've lived here for about 15 years, I'm not Canadian, so I don't have a vote. In some ways I'm like the Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer; your modern Canadian political world frightens and confuses me. For example, I understand why lobbyists have to be registered, but would that be enough to negate ...
