Re: Stonehammer Pilsner

I bought a sixer of the re-formulated Stonehammer Pilsner and I'm favourably impressed. I'd say it's as good as King Pilsner and better than Steamwhistle, even taking into account that Steamwhistle is much improved. Lager isn't my first love, but this is good. Have others tried the new Stonehammer?...

Re: Andres Wines buys Granville Island

I just saw the following blurb in the weekly beer news update at Rate Beer: "Andres Wines has agreed to purchase Cascadia Brands, a wine and beer firm operating out of Kelowna, BC. Cascadia makes the Granville Island beers. GI’s seasonal beers, made at a pilot plant in Vancouver, are well-rega...

Some East European breweries apparently use peas in the mash, an old practice to enhance strach and fermentable sugar content. This may explain a vegetable taste, but maybe the bottles weren't super-fresh, that is a possibility. Speaking of fresh beer from far away, on business recently in New York...

Related to this, I've just stumbled across an article about the Ontario Craft Brewers from the latest issue of Marketing magazine: http://www.marketingmag.ca/shared/print.jsp?content=20050509_68497_68497 (It will probably try to send the article to your printer, so be ready to stop it...) Nice to k...

Re: Ontario Craft Beer Survey

http://www.hotspex.com/clickspex.asp?id=215 "We are interested in the opinions of men and women between the ages of 19 and 34 years who drink beer." Looks like the craft brewers are just as fixated on the younger demographic as the big boys. I guess the opinions of 36 year olds like mysel...

I'd be curious to see what the results are. Probably nothing experienced brewers don't already know. My take is that local pride only works once - people will try the beer if it's made around the corner. But nobody will come back to a beer they don't favour just because it's local. They might in rea...

Mill Street got it quite deservedly, launching with a lousy, ridiculously-priced beer. They also got it quite deservedly for their wonderful Tankhouse and seasonal products. I found their treatment here to be quite fair for both the things they've done well from a beer geek's perspective and the thi...

I am not even sure why this discusssion is taking place. Most of the Ontario ales are NOT american style. They use different hop combinations, as you said they are generally lower in alcohol. As for quality comparison, it's a matter of preference. I tried every single Ontario beer and every time I ...

Not a huge surprise about Glenora. The brewery was located in Prince Edward County not far from my step Father's house. As a result I was very familiar with their products from numerous samplings during the holidays. In my opinion they has some quality control issues that lead to very inconsistent ...

King Pilsener is excellent, I agree, and there are others although they may not quite approximate that Urquel honeyed/Saaz taste that is so unique (e.g. Cameron lager is very good). I find canned Urquel remarkably good for an imported canned beer. Since any Urquel that is draft would be pasteurised...

I spent a week in Oregon last year and was incredibly impressed. One can get good craft beer almost anywhere. Even the one bar in the small Portland airport had 15 micros on tap...makes Pearson look like a wasteland by comparison. I won't get into a style debate but if you give people what they wan...

Re: Cask Conditioned F&M Stonehammer Dark

For those of you who are into ratebeer (I am not), I came across something at Volo on Saturday afternoon that I had never had, or seen, previously - cask conditioned F&M Stonehammer Dark Ale. Don't know if this is new or if it is old news to ratebeerians. Anyway, it was pleasantly malty, and mo...
