Re: Ontario Cider Week - May 30-June 6

So I dropped by The Only Cafe last night, not for the seminar, but just to taste things. I have to say, first, that I love this place. They were still doing their incredible taster deal $10 for 5, 5-oz pours of anything on tap or in the bottles. Even though their dishwasher was breaking glasses left...

Wow! It was good, but don't know that good. That's $35 CAD, so with a 50% markup would be more like $50. Couldn't justify that. Please refer the people in the thread complaining about Bellwoods' prices to this thread.

Maybe you weren't drinking out of the can as directed.

Re: Vermont

I did a day trip into Vermont and got dinged for duty on everything. It was actually quite weird how they calculated it. I had something like 7.5 L of beer. They didn't charge any provisional markups. Just $2 and change for a federal duty plus HST (I think Ontario HST) on the cost. I had read on the...

Re: New Arrivals at LCBO & TBS

i dunno about most here but i don't even really consider bellwoods overpriced. most of their beers are $5 a pop. for a 500ml bottle thats not too shabby at all. I agree…although I do fondly remember the days when all their beers came in 650 ml bottles for the same price they do now. One thing to no...

Re: Goose Island Migration Week - May 26-29

The Stout lived up to expectations with its massive velvety mouthfeel and beautifully integrated bourbon notes (vanilla, oak, char). I also liked the Ogden - lemony, estery, dry and slightly hoppier than your average Tripel. The Barleywine was okay but not really my thing - fairly similar in taste ...

Agreed that this batch is good…also quite different from Jutsu 1.0. My personal estimation is that this is perhaps my second favorite of their pale/IPA/double IPA offerings, after Roman Candle.

Re: Goose Island Migration Week - May 26-29

Not a bad event. Bourbon county stout was quite tasty, but not worth an insane detour. Packed.
Pours of the BCS and barley wine were tiny! Advertised as 7.75 oz for $5, reality was closer to 3-4 oz.
Nothing else interesting on tap.

Re: Ontario Cider Week - May 30-June 6

Looks like The Only Cafe is doing a seminar and tasting. Any idea what the lineup is for the tasting? I'm sort of reluctant to spend $25 when I have no idea what's included. The BarHop one looks interesting. I love BarHop, but I often find if I order 4 oz tasters at their special events that they're...

Looks like this got a mention in BlogTo today, but sort of buried below the lead.
I think I'm going to head over to check it out today.

Re: Goose Island Migration Week - May 26-29

What a strange venue for this event. I just looked at the Banknote Bar webpage and their Facebook, and there's zero mention of the Goose Island event. Their last Facebook post is from December urging us to book our holiday parties there, so there's clearly no promotion of this going on from their si...

Re: New Arrivals at LCBO & TBS

Probably not. Long Dark Voyage to Uranus was priced at the same amount and it went very quickly. Also, I don't think that Girl Pants is as mediocre as you think it is. Should be interesting. I actually didn't say Girl Pants is mediocre. I've tried two distinctly different versions of it in this las...

Re: Build Bigger LCBO Stores

The stores don't need to be that much bigger. If you visit any of the great beer stores in the US or elsewhere, some of them are quite small. They just don't decide that they need shelf space for 48 beers of each kind stacked 8 across and 6 deep. Instead they put fewer bottles on display. Existing s...

Re: New Arrivals at LCBO & TBS

Agreed on all points except that 6-packs of outstanding beers (like most of the Sierra Nevada lineup) can still be had for $10 or less in the States, a key difference that can't be overlooked. But yes, weak and overpriced offerings can be found anywhere and are not unique to Ontario. You're right. ...

Re: Summerhill Growler/Craft Beer Destination Store

What really needed to happen in the craft beer category was some experiment with a private craft beer store. Either run by some collective of small brewers or operated completely independently. Go ahead an apply all the standard markups, but let them buy what they want from Ontario and import what t...
