I use a 10 gallon rectangular cooler with good results. My efficiency is typically ~70% which isn't the greatest but tossing in another pound or two of grain doesn't greatly increase the cost of brewing. I got my cooler at Dick's Sporting Goods. I think it was $20. When purchasing a braid to use as ...

Re: Carboy Warming Belt

Does anyone have one of these I could borrow? I waited too long to do my saison in the summer and its getting rather chilly in the apt, which is pretty much the opposite of what is needed temperature wise. Jer - get a big bucket - I use a rubbermaid storage container - & a fully submersible fis...

I have got the 1809 from Premier Gourmet. The style is really hard to find. 1809 is probably the best commercial bottled example available in the US. Dogfish's Festina Peche is OK, but not really all that. The recipe in BYO is too complicated. If you're a homebrewer it is super easy to brew one. I'...

a friendly note:

DO NOT BUY THE YULESMITH IN BUFFALO.

It's really old. Years old. We in Buffalo got the stock that wouldn't sell in NYC in 2007 or so & it's been around since.

All Yulesmith in Buffalo is this old stock. So unless you want an aged hoppy beer, avoid.

FWIW, Chimay has been using hop extract for some time now. I'm unsure about other breweries, but I know they do.

I don't have any links to back this up, but I've always heard that cracked grains need to be used quickly - within a few days or maybe a couple weeks. I think you'd go insane trying to crush with a rolling pin. A food processor is just going to pulverize some grains to flour & leave others whole...

Saint Somewhere for sure - far and away the best FL beer I've encountered. I'm unsure if Cigar City is bottling yet but I've heard good things about them.

so, even premier is gouging the canadian cross border shoppers? :) and they are closer to the source than the place in chicago I saw it listed for three weeks ago at $9.69? Premier is typically a more expensive outlet in Buffalo for beer. There selection is unparalleled - but prices can often be be...

Check out megabus.com as well for cheaper fares. If you do take Greyhound or Megabus, you can hop on the #20 bus in front of the Buffalo coach terminal. It'll take you right to Cole's. The schedule is at http://www.nfta.com/metro/route_020.asp -- Fare is $1.50 each way. Or you can cab it. Cheers - ...

Re: Brooklyn black chocolate not coming

That sucks. Just curious though, Black Chocolate is available everywhere here in Buffalo - bottles (and I'm assuming draught). How could a fire in a packaging plant, which seems to havey been addressed based on what is availble here in Buffalo - has impacted you guys. The fire didn't (AFAIK) impact...

We've been planning our Christmas party on the 5th, so a 9am start the next day was unfortunately a no-go for me. For people still interested in going, greyhound can get you to Buffalo for around $40 return, and in about 2 hours. I think the bus to Cole's leaves from very close to the coach station...

Re: Brooklyn black chocolate not coming

Hey folks. Was curious about the timing of Black Chocolate's arrival, so I sent an e-mail to the agent (given how inaccurate the official channels can sometimes be in terms of timing), and I got some bad news. The Black Chocolate isn't coming in this year. Before we all shit upon the LCBO in unison...

also, as Joe says in that recipe, the sour mash looks nasty after 4 or 5 days. Really nasty. Its ok - ignore your instincts & add it to your main batch.

Just don't tell anyone how disgusting it looked until after they've complimented you on how good the final beer tastes :)
