Well, my first visit to Volo was an unqualified success. My first beer was a bottle of the Tsarina Katarina Imperial Stout and as I poured it into my glass, my friend's eyes goggled and he said "Holy Sh*t!" as the viscous brown liquid practically oozed from the bottle. Needless to say, it ...

Great suggestions, all. I've had the Mill Street Coffee Porter but will look out for the others. I'm especially interested in the European examples, but the idea of porter from the "colonies" is also interesting. The Brits exported more than just soccer, I guess...

I saw that on their list and wrote it down on a piece of paper so I won't forget later (boy, I am a beer geek!).

Do they do samples of their on-tap stuff?

European Stout?

I'm a huge fan of stouts, but am ignorant when it comes to German and Belgian beers. I wondered if there is a similar style of beer outside of Ireland/Britain/North America that would be interesting to try? Any recommendations? By the way, I'll be paying my first visit to Volo tonight and would also...

I'd have to say I'm in agreement with tupalev on this one. Too many frat boys and bad beers and a dearth of decent food and water and shade. Long lineups for the portapotties. Just a sad atmosphere. I much prefer drinking my beer in a dark pub with friends interested in conversation. That being said...

Wow, that's responsive customer service! I can't wait to go now and try the beers! (Thanks Carl!)

While I have your attention, the RSS feed link doesn't work, either. Any chance of fixing that, too? :)

Harry, sorry but we don't actually import any beer at the moment. Although one of the guys I know from a winery in Chile just left his job to devote himself full-time to his passion for beer. He and his buddies make 2 beers under the Kross label (see www.kross.cl) and I've joked that we should impor...

Wow, thanks a lot! What a list. It looks like I'll be visiting some night next week. What are prices like? Is there any way to "sample" a few different beers on tap?

Thanks for all your help!

I'm used to paying attention to the bi-monthly releases of wine through VINTAGES but am totally unfamiliar with how beers are released. How does someone find out the schedule and which beers are being released (apart from checking here, that is!) Wouldn't it be great if the LCBO put together a relea...

Volo Website?

I've never been to Volo before and am looking forward to my first visit soon, but... Is it just me or is the Volo website useless? I can't get any of the links to work. I may be on a Mac but that shouldn't exclude me! I've tried both Safari and Firefox and nada. As a web developer, this bugs me beca...

I'll bite. I've been drinking beer since the late 1970s, legally since 1984, and since I was born in Dublin, I expect that some of my baby bottles were actually filled with Guinness. I'm definitely a darker ale/stout fan and my standbys are Guinness, Smithwick's and the Granite's Peculiar. It doesn'...

I'd visited the site some time back but the article reminded me it was here and so I signed up for the forums. Glad to be here! By the way, I actually work for a wine importing agency and love wine as well, but as the article said, it's much more affordable to try different beers, and there isn't as...

That never seemed to happen. My roommate and I moved into the area in 1994 and wanted to make it our local so that at least they'd recognize us. I may not be in twice a week, but every couple of weeks for more than ten years and I still get the blank look from most of the servers. It's kind of very ...

The Granite is my local and I've had many pints of Peculiar there over the years, but I've always hated the service. There's one guy in particular who's worked there for years and years and is still just as clueless as when he started. He's the sort of guy who calls you "Guy" or "Chie...

Great thread! I'm new here (thanks Toronto Star) but would also recommend Scallywags and the Bow and Arrow. Scruffy Murphy's was a good spot during the 1998 World Cup (Eglinton east of Yonge).
