Re: DAB Dark Beer

I recently had their Maibock and thought it was fairly good.

I also had the Czechvar Dark, which wasn't stellar, but when I finished the bottle I really wanted more!

Re: What're you brewing right now?

Bad Tattoo has been hosting the local homebrewers for a number of brew offs... After the next one they'll declare a Brewer of the year that'll get to do a collaborative brew on the big system. The next style is Scottish ale, so I brewed a 'lighter' one for a nice yeast cake for a Wee Heavy. The 80is...

Re: Chester's Beers Of The World - Hamilton, ON

I remember going in there around 1995 and not knowing much about beer. We tried a couple of different bottles and marveled at the Japanese Lager that was priced at $50 or so... certainly rare at the time, but probably not that good. Then in 2005, Len shared a bottle of Goudenband (from 1987) with Mi...

Re: Good beer stores in Vancouver

The government BC Liquor stores are improving in some areas. Still not LCBO level yet, but you might find some good discoveries. My favourite independent, if you are downtown is Viti at Seymour and Smithe. The owner is pretty hands on as a curator and one staff member actually 'complained' to me ab...

Re: Molson Coors bringing its ‘craft’ beer Blue Moon to Canada

Maybe they hope to get it established and then change the name later? But it is incredibly dumb when they already have Rickards White.

my money's on No Rest For The Wicked Aaaand we have a winner! http://bellwoodsbrewery.com/no-shut-eye/ Sounds like this will be interesting...I wonder what the point of diminishing returns with barrel-aging is? Does a beer start to get worse at some point? Depends on the barrel... and what lives wi...

Re: Canadian Brewing Awards 2015

2 years ago, I thought Howesound was a real contender, and last year I thought parallel 49 should be up there as well, but IMHO, they've both suffered some growing pains... P49 in particular. Their limited stuff is often top notch, but they seem to be heavily filtering their regular line up. I first...

Re: Trafalgar ESB, Chocolate Orange Porter, Mighty Oak

Some decent reviews by Jordan: http://saintjohnswort.ca/revisit-trafalgar-ales-meads/ I'd say there's a lot of common beer names when you look at different markets, but they did reuse a few. Even the name of the series is a bit nostalgic: http://www.thebeerstore.ca/beers/black-label But lawsuits are...

Re: Re:

I think that strange thinness is just an infection that hasn't reached your flavour threshold yet. They've always done some interesting stuff, and it's not bad when it's fresh from the brewery, but it ALWAYS goes downhill. They're always making new things (or just relabelling), and I think there's ...

Looking good! I'll try to contribute some worthy content from the west coast. I have to admit that my 'news' started to feel a lot less relevant as the Ontario scene started to really develop. Originally I had hoped to illustrate what a dynamic beer scene was really like, and that it was actually po...

2 curious questions for you

1. oxygen stone to aerate?
2. will you re-oxygenate at 24 hrs?
I've never done a brew this big, but oxygenation is really for yeast growth. If you're pitching it on a healthy cake, I don't think it's necessary.
