Town Crier Pub

Post by kormt »

The Town Crier Pub is opened last night at the premises of the now defunct Fat Belgian on John St. They have 50+ taps and all but a handful are European. Seems like a nice drinking venue and hopefully they will be there for some time.

Super, I live on King and John so it's a short stumble....

50 + taps sounds like as treat! Enjoy!

Stopped in here on a whim Saturday afternoon. It has a really weird vibe. The way the staff interact feels like something out of Kitchen Nightmares. It feels badly managed and the service, at least at the bar, while friendly, was pretty spotty.

The decor reminds me of Sin and Redemption as does the taps list. Lots of Belgian, German and UK stuff, with King Pilsner, Amsterdam Boneshaker and Creemore Lager representing North America.

There's lots of stuff from Paulaner, Hacker Pshorr, Weinhestephaner, Fullers and La Trappe. Grimbergen Dubbel. Delirium Tremens and Urthel are there. Pilsner Urquell. Hobgoblin. Stuff like that. If you like wheat beers you'll be in heaven.

I had the Hacker Pshorr Kellerbier and Boneshaker. Both were in good shape.

We didn't plan to eat there, but got the munchies so we ordered the curry poutine to snack on which was tasty, but needed salt.

Overall kind of an odd place that I don't feel the need to go back to. Not that it's not nice. It's just not my kind of place. If I was in the area and wanted a pint I'd rather hit up Smokeless Joe. And it's not at all the sort of place I like to eat at. But there's certainly lots of beers to choose from.

We took the plunge Friday night and went for drinks and dinner. We had no issues with the service as it was prompt and friendly. The food was okay. We had the curry poutine, burger, schnitzel and spaetzle. The portion sizes were pretty good, not too large. I was able to try several beers that I've never had on tap before. I think we will return when we want to do the European beer thing as we live nearby.

I went on Mon, it's like a giant version of S&R. Nice to have on my street.

I've been there twice now and found the service very good. Even before the opening game of the jays, service was excellent. The food that night though seemed rushed. The first time I ate there the food was excellent.

The staff seems to really know their beers, which is a bonus.

I work around the corner and am sure this will be my Friday night stop to "read" on my way home

I noticed yesterday morning that the Town Crier Pub had updated their beer draught & bottles lists on their site. Both looked good, and there were a few interesting well-reviewed items on the bottles list that I hadn't had.

http://www.towncrierpub.ca/menus/Imported%20bottles.pdf
Corsendonk $8.50
It is a mellow, dark, top-fermented beer, refermented and matured in the
bottle to obtain a lively, bubbly beer with a rich head.
This is the Pater
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/41/138
a very nice belgian dubbel.

Not on the list, but they also had the Corsendonk Agnus tripel
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/41/139
A solid example of the style.

Also in stock was:
Vanderghinste $8.50
It is a South West Flemish brown beer of mixed fermentation that is
typical for this region. As basic ingredients for VanderGhinste Oud Bruin
is used malted barley, wheat, caramel malt, hops and water.
If you like the Rodenbach Grand Cru, this compared well.

On their list, but NOT in yet, was:
Ommegang Abbey Ale $8.50
Deep burgundy colour with a big, fluffy head. Complex fruit aromas with
a layered sweetness (honey, then caramel, ten toffee) with a hit of licorice
and chocolate. A big, rich, abbey-style ale that fries out nicely on the
finish.
So, I guess that'll be my excuse to make my next visit sooner rather than later. :)

The food menu was new and expanded from my last visit. Good stuff. I was impressed with the service. I'd seen but not printed-out the updated bottle list; their print edition was missing the last page where the Ommegang and the Vanderghinste were, but the waiters searched out the later and also let me know of not-yet-on-the-list items like the Corsendonk Agnus tripel and the Omer Traditional Blond
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/223/53029
and the Achel Extra

Thanks. Nice to know the draft beer has been updated and some food changes.

We usually hit the place in the summer a few times since it's the best patio in the area but we've been getting kind of bored there.

You can see the draft list at http://www.towncrierpub.ca/beer.html
Recently added:
La Chouffe 8.0% alc./vol. 33CL $6.95
An unfiltered blond beer, which is refermented in the bottle as well
as in the keg. It is pleasantly fruity, spiced with coriander and has a
light hop taste.

Houblon Chouffe 9.0% alc./vol. 25CL $6.95
Was brewed for the first time in 2006. It is an Indian Pale Ale
beer, with a harmonious balance between a marked bitterness
(three types of hops are used to make it) and a pleasant fruitiness.
Houblon Chouffe is unfiltered and refermented in the bottle as
well as in the keg.

Liefmans Fruitesse 4.2% alc./vol. 25CL $5.95
A fresh Belgian beer blend, maturing for 18 months on cherries in
Liefmans cellars, artfully blended with natural juices of strawberry,
raspberry, cherry, blueberry and juniper berry resulting in a fruity,
pleasantly sweet, sparkling and refreshing beer.

Fuller’s Black Cab Stout 4.2% alc./vol. 50CL $6.95
Brewed with a grist produced from five diffrent malts including
Ale malt, Imperial malt, Crystal malt, Chocolate malt and Golden
malted oats. This style of stout delivers a rich full flavour from the
chocolate malts, with a creamy finish.
And it's worth checking

to see if anyone's had a new brew there recently.

Reviving an old thread.

Do these two pubs share common ownership?

I was looking at Thrillist, which did a "best of" back in July. http://www.thrillist.com/drink/toronto/ ... o?ir=venue

Town Crier and Sin & Redemption were on the list. I looked at their sites: the beer and food menus at both venues seem too similar to be a coincidence. Or is it?

I haven't been to either one yet, but hope to get there.
