Bier Market's new beer list + Unibroue Seigneuriale on tap.

Post by Jonah Hex »

Bier Market's new beer menu is out. While most of the new beers aren't in yet. But 3 out of the 4 seasonal choices on the Unibroue rotating tap are ones I haven't seen in Ontario. Currently it's the Seigneuriale, which was a retired brew:

I had the chance to try this and the Quatre-Centième back in 2008 and I thought both of them were phenomenal. Haven't made an effort to visit my local Bier Markt yet (Queensway & North Queen) but Seigneuriale on tap is a good excuse to go. Thanks for the heads up.

Apparently Seigneuriale is also on tap right now at Cest What.
I like the idea of getting some different Unibroue taps in town...perhaps Trois Pistoles will make an arenaceous one day.

I still remember in wonderment how a little hostel in Tadoussac, Quebec served me full pint glasses of Trois Pistoles last summer, usually for only $5.

Seigneuriale is world-class, and stands up to a lot of newer recipe craft beers without apology. Unibroue needs to put its best foot forard in the game right now and Seigneuriale is one of the more distinctive Uni-brews.

I have, snob of snobs, always avoided the 'commercial' Bier Markt but finally checked it out the other day (King at Portland.) Very nice space, great selection and very moderate to cheap prices.

I was curious (as a semi-athletic person and motorist) about the alcohol-free Weissbier options, and BM have quite an extensive bottle list for one to go and try new things or old favorites that are unavailable or substantially more costly elsewhere.

On a silly note, the entire menu uses the spelling bier in italicized font, everywhere regardless of what nationality beer it is describing. Kind of a pain in the ass but funny too.

Big bottles are also now listed at the LCBO:

And last I heard the next beer on BierMarkt's UNIBROUE Rotating Tap will be another that hasn't been available in Ontario, Ephemere Cerise, is due this month.

Great beers, the Éphémère Pomme in 2009 was so tasty in the 750mls, with fresh cidery and apple-peel flavors and somehow a note of lemon and vanilla.

What's with Unibroue upping their game lately, they clearly want to get our attention again.

I chatted with the Unibroue rep at one of the Only festivals last year. I asked her a couple of questions that amounted to why we hadn't seen anything new or interesting from them in a while, even at the festivals and such. She told me that they had temporarily lost some of their brewing capacity to the parent company for some reason. So it's possible that this new game-upping from Unibroue might be related to them getting their full capacity back, which lets them ship a little more or different stuff to Ontario.

^ Well this can't hurt now that their underlings are kicking Unibroue's ass here in a big way. You could drink your way through a lot of Quebec seasonals and not even miss UB - and I say this with the respect we owe the brewer & it's very high integrity:
The Canadian Food Inpection Agency (CFIA) has forced this brewer
to withdraw its "GMO Free" labeling.

Not because the ingredients used now contain GMOs, but because
the CFIA is part of the machine trying to gain and maintain
acceptance of GMOs in Canada. As Lucy Sharratt of Sierra Club
Canada pointed out in
January 2000 :

"The Canadian Food Inspection Agency was created partly to
resolve the conflict between the regulation and promotion of genetic
engineering in Agriculture Canada. But the mandate of CFIA
continues to include trade. The Canadian government has made a
huge investment in biotechnology."

In other words, 'We're here to help." Yes they are. We pay them a lot of taxes to help big evil companies like Monsanto.
