Can anyone suggest a list of good pubs in downtown Ottawa?

A friend is going there later this month or early next month and will have to pass many a cold evening for the 2-4 weeks that he is there. Micros and imports are a priority. Good food will also be a consideration.

They will be staying at a central hotel on business for a few weeks and will be without a car, so these places have to be relatively central. Is there a report somewhere on BarTowel.com?

Thanks and Regards,

Uncle Bobby

Anytime I make the road trip to watch the Leafs play, I try to stop by The Manx on Elgin, which has a great cozy atmosphere, more than a couple quality taps, and knowledgeable service. I've always thought the quality of pubs in Ottawa, in general, was pretty good, but that's from someone who only visits there a couple times a year.

Try the Dom (Dominion tavern) located right under a strip joint in the market. Last time I checked they carried, WEllington, KLB, Steam Whistle etc.

The Earl of Sussex has alot of Imports on tap.

Double Decker has some small micros on tap located in the market.

For a concert visit Barrymore's on bank st. They carry micros on tap.

Arrow & The loon which is part of the Neighbourhood pub group. (Bank & Fourth st)

The Arrow and The Loon is at Bank and 5th. The Black Tomato is an excellent choice for food and beer. Vineyards, below the Fish Market restaurant in the Market has a great selection of bottled beers.
Ottawa isn't the most micro friendly place though. Belgians and other imports are found more easily than most micro brews.
Hey Uncle Bobby...from one whose ancestors came from Ireland to build the canal (and never had enough money to go home) :The Sens managed to "suck' seven goals outta your Leafs last week. The Sens may suck, but the Leafs swallow!:)

Hardly anything to gloat about when Sundin, Belfour, Nolan, Mogilny, Kaberle, and Reichel were not in the lineup (oh, and Belak too but we're not exactly bummed out over that one  ).

Imagine Ottawa playing without Hossa, Alfie, Spezza, Bonk, Havlat, and Lalime/Prusek, and your backup 'keeper having a crap game.

I would gladly have a healthy Leaf team meet up with a healthy Sens team in the playoffs - we all remember what happened last time, right? And the time before that, right? And the time before that, right?

Oh...while on the subject...if you want to go for a brisk walk on the dark side (Quebec that is), the Dépanne Plus in Hull, which is 15 min. walk from downtown Ottawa, carries many mcirobrews from Quebec:

Dépanne Plus 819-777-2610
2 Victoria, Hull, QC J8X 1Z6

And if you do have access to a car, there is this cool little bar in Aylmer which carries interesting beers:
L'Autre Oeil Bistro 819-682-1221
55, rue Principale
