Prague and Plzen

I'm headed to the Czech Republic in August, so I thought I'd start a thread for Prague and Plzen, as I can only see scattered comments about those cities here on BT and not a dedicated thread. The amount of beery adventures in Prague seem endless and outstrip the week or so I'll have there, so any recommendations for breweries, bars/pubs, restaurants to help narrow it down would be awesome. Any general non-beer related recommendations for things to do and see while in the Czech Republic are also welcome. Cheers.

Oh, I'm going to Plzen as well! Will only have a day or two there at the beginning of July but any tips will be welcome.

There is a vicarious request from one of my colleagues to have Pilsner Urquell on cask and report back to him how amazing it is. So... Thoughts?

The brewery tour in Plzen isn't bad. You get to taste some of it in unfiltered in the lagering cellar. When I was there they were canning Kozel. (I don't think they brew Kozel there but I could be wrong). Unlike the Budvar/Czechvar brewery, where I think you need to book in advance or show up at a specific time of the day, you can just show up at the Pilsner Urquell brewery any time during the day and go on one of the tours.

This is a good guide to Plzen pubs: http://www.europeanbeerguide.net/pilspubs.htm

As you can see most places serve only a couple of beers. Notice too that they include the gravity of each beer.

Plzen also has a beer museum but I didn't go to it.

The most popular beer in the country is Gambrinus. It's a typical Eurolager but the unfiltered version of it is pretty good.

Due to the out-laws being with us and the insanely limited amount of time there (not by my choice), I only managed to get into one pub which was Lokál - Dlouhá.

Most food items were cut off at 10pm. Just Pilsner Urquell available but super fresh. The place was very busy.

Was in Prague for my honeymoon, unfortunately I was just getting into craft beer.

I've heard that going to the Pilsner Urquell brewery and having the unfiltered version on tap is a must.

I loved the fresh Pilsner Urquell in the tunnels at the end of the tour. Before you leave, ask for a refill. Worked for me :D The beer at Na Splice restaurant across the courtyard is pretty damn good as well. U Medvidku in Prague has Tankova Budvar. It was the only place in Prague with it. When you walk across Charles Bridge (everyone does) there is a small beer store on the castle side just off of the main drag that has all Czech beer. I found some unusual and lesser known beers there.

Did you get there in August? Anything to report? I will have a chance to go to Prague in February.
