I'm heading to the big city for a week in May. Anywhere I should go in particular? (Bottle shops interest me more than beerbars at this point)

I did a beer tour a couple of years ago...

- Ginger Man (midtown)
- David Copperfield's (upper east)
- d.b.a (2nd / 1st area)
- Blind Tiger
- Chumley's
- Heartland Brewpub (various locations)

You should probably google to get exact info, I think Blind Tiger moved since I was there.

I'm going down there too in the beginning of May, Whole Foods seems like a good bet, they have a beer room at Houston and Chrystie, with a price listing and I'm also interested in checking out the barSpuyten Duyvil . There's also Beer Menus to keep an eye on for any beer events. I'm trying to guage how many bombers I can bring back too.

I was there in the fall of 2006. Didn't do much shopping, but hit lots of bars. I posted a 6-part trip report (one for each day/evening) on my blog - http://beerbeatsbites.wordpress.com/category/nyc/ will bring them all up.

Some other places worth checking out in NYC:
Spitzer's Corner, Lower East Side not far from the awesome Whole Foods beer room and DBA

Fette Sau is a fanatastic BBQ joint across the street from Spuyten Duyvil (same owner) in Brooklyn. If you are a BBQ fan, the wait for a picnic table in this converted garage-like affair is totally worth it.

I also saw a Victory beergarden near the ferry to the Staue of Liberty. There's some mention of it here.

Finally, the Blind Tiger Alehouse has moved into some cool new digs on Bleeker Street. It no longer feels "divey" and seems to be very popular with the after-work crowd.

The Gotham Imbiber probably deserves its own post. A 158 page guide to everything beer-related in NYC.

I very much enjoyed Gingerman and Hop Devil when i was in NYC last may. Bonus on Hopdevil is the overall east village vibe and the proximity to McSorley's Ale house so you can swing by and partake in the "tradition" of the light or the dark.

Had a nice meal at South Street Seaport Heartland, but wasn't blown away by the beers, typical chainbrewpub fare.

I think there's also a Spuyten Duyvil Grocery store, but I can't seem to find a real website for it, its at 132 N 5th St (between Bedford Ave & Berry St).
It's closed on Mondays

I'm going down for a few days at the end of April and I'll post any info.

I got back from New York the other day, I never got to go to any real beer bars, but I did get about 10 bombers at the Bowery Whole Foods (I brought down a foam wine shipper in my luggage and filled it up, my suitcase weighed almost 70 lbs going home). They had lots of Unibroue (Terrible and U17), sad that I had to go to a foreign country to get beers from our neighboring province. Definitely make a visit.

foam wine shipper?!?! i go on lots of trips down south and bring back about 20 bottles of beer (all sizes) per trip in my luggage using nothing more than dollar store kitchen garbage bags and my clothes. After hauling more than 300 bottles back I'm convinced that beer bottles are indestructible. 10 bombers is a pretty good haul though. any winners?

I haven't had any yet, but I got a St.Bernardus Abt 12, 2 Brooklyn Local 1's, Stone Ruination, Ommegang Abbey Ale, Achel Extra, Rochefort 10, Delerium Nocturne, Dogfish Head 120 minute IPA and a Unibroue Terrible. My wife was nice enough to help me haul half of them through the Village. I did find Radeberger on tap and had some Sierra Nevada at the Iridium Jazz Club (if you are into guitar music, the legendary Les Paul plays every Monday night in Time's Square, he's 95 but there are some amazing players with him)

My wife made the fatal error of allowing me to book the accommodation for our trip down there this summer. I managed to get a hotel 5 minutes away from Ginger Man and Rattle 'n' Hum. Guess what we'll be doing in the evenings?

Sadly, my personal experience says otherwise. :(
