LCBO Lucky Finds

Post by GtownRandy »

I thought it might be fun to start a thread of beers that were a surprise to find still in a store, that are likely discontinued and dont even show up in the inventory. Yesterday i checked out the Worthington LCBO in Brampton, and in a wicker basket where they put the odds and ends there were three bottles of Nøgne Ø Underlig Jul from 2014, mixed in with the usual cans of coolers and Canadians. Also they still had a Samuel Smith gift box with 3 beers and a glass leftover from xmas, Organic Choc Stout, Oatmeal Stout and IPA. Last time i was there in January they still had St. Bernardus mixed 6 packs. I took 3 but for some reason left one or two - rookie mistake!

Anyone else have any good finds lately?

In the past, I got excited with those kinds of "finds" when it came to whisky, now I stay away from the dust bin all together!

LCBO can't be trusted with storage & handling - there's no way to know what bottles go through in those stores*. Whisky is tolerant of time in bottle, and to a certain extent temperature fluctuation, but vast majority of beer is not.

*for example: it is well known that high alcohol content eats away at corks, yet it's not uncommon to see whisky bottles on their sides in lcbo stores. They have no clue these should be treated differently than wine. LCBO is a wine merchant - don't trust them with any other beverage!

@portwood, you raise some good points. Hopefully these will be alright, at least they were in the cold section at the back of the store. The Nogne has a best by of 2017 (brewed 2014) so it should tolerate the aging, as probably the stouts from the Smith's box.

Yeah, any excitement or novelty we can discover at the cookie-cutter LCBO is worth noting!

I found the beer displays at the new (there's only one, at Summerhill) Growler Center to be amazingly well-lit from the window, but they told me those are dummy / display bottles.

So now there's shelf space in the LCBO for beer that doesn't exist, as well as no room for many a beer that does. It's a wonderful system! ;)

Boulevard BBQ 2015 marked down 25% at store in Markham (Bullock Dr).
The store used what looked like a pre-printed price tag so I thought it was a system-wide markdown but system still showing $14.30

Great pick-up on the Boulevard and Laga 8. A couple weeks back I brought a six pack of Stone Xocoveza Stout up to cash knowing full well they'd scan the case and not the bottle. Sure enough I'm walking out with a $20 six pack for just $4.15   :D

I was in the area yesterday so dropped by the LCBO at Rymal and Upper Centennial in the outskirts of Hamilton. Despite not being listed online, they had about 24 Bons Voeux bottles kicking around - at the same reduced price of $5.55 that Belgian noted as being applied at one of the downtown Toronto LCBOs a couple weeks back. I already have a handful being cellared so I only picked up a couple more. Should still be plenty left for those in the area and so inclined.

There are also quite a few of these left at the Ferry St LCBO in Niagara Falls.
You know what I have in my cellar? Dust, I have dust in my cellar.

My closest store is the LC at the Warden & Eglinton Smart Centre, and I find often enough specialty beers hang around for a bit longer there. The selection in general is quite good for suburban Scarborough- as of this weekend they had some bottles of Jolly Pumpkin Bam Biere left, which I haven't really seen elsewhere anymore.

Lots of marked down Bons Voeux at the Lake Shore and Browns Line LCBO. Near the entrance on the feature shelves and in the cold beer room.

Is this beer at risk for skunking?

I called Hello LCBO and the rep was able to search a second database which showed which stores still had this and Bam Biere.

There are a few displays of Dupont Les Bons Voeux at Queen and Spadina.

* Update * about half the Voeux is now gone, maybe 15 bottles remain. Got what I need!

This is worth a shot with KBS.

I certainly don't condone stealing but if one wanted to improve their chances of slipping 5 individual bottles past a cashier for the price of 1, then provide the cashier with several other items to scan before the six pack, especially if you have another six pack that is not meant for individual sale.
