Brick Brewery brings North American Breweries to Canada

Post by icemachine »

Does Brick sell in other provinces besides Ontario? Be interesting to see just how far they are willing to distribute these beers

http://www.newswire.ca/en/story/881303/ ... -to-canada

WATERLOO, ON, Nov. 21, 2011 /CNW/ - Brick Brewing Company (TSX.BRB) announced today it will start importing and distributing select North American Brewery beers into Canada. Included within the mix is Magic Hat; craft brewed in Vermont, this quirky and mysterious brand is currently the 10th largest craft brand in the United States and 3rd largest in the Northeast USA.

"As Ontario's original craft brewer, we were determined to share Magic Hat with beer drinkers in Canada" said George Croft President and CEO of Brick Brewing Co. Limited.

A long-term arrangement between North American Breweries, the fifth largest craft brewer in the U.S. and Brick Brewing Company, the fifth largest brewer in Canada, will see many more popular out-of-the-ordinary, distinctively different easy-drinking craft brewed beers introduced into Canada over the coming years.

Interesting story. Not sure how easy it would be to get Magic Hat into ontario since their flagship beer is their #9, and there is already a #9 beer in Ontario. Especially since all of the magic hat mix packs always come with #9 it could seriously limit their options in Ontario. According to the article they also carry the Dundee brands. I picked up a Dundee mix pack a few years ago and it wasn't anything impressive.

The really interesting thing is that they carry the Pyramid brand. A few years ago I was in Seattle and tried some Pyramid. The Kolch they make (curve ball I think they call it) was actually pretty good.

I'd guess its more likely to be Beer Store distribution ... Might be some worth looking at next time I haul my random assortment of bottles in (Got an extra $1.20 this week when the guy thought 550ml bottles were worth 20 cents.)

No thread hijacking intended but...what is Brick Brewing contributing these days to craft brewing? No sarcasm meant, this is a genuine question.

From a quick look at their products on their site, Brick's craft beer offerings may be outdone by some of the brands they intend to import.

The scent in the air when they brew on thursday and sunday. (I live behind the brewery on King st.)

Seriously - nothing. They seem content to brew buck a beer (Maker a Laker anyone?) with the occasional poorly executed seasonal..Radlermass?! I will still drink a Waterloo Dark if nothing else is available in Uptown Waterloo.
Back on topic, almost any Magic Hat will be better than anything they produce... but that's not saying much.

I had a barley wine Magic Hat made that was pretty good and they used to make a pretty good stout as well. Their market nowadays seems to be fair to middling Ales and fancy packaging. their stuff is a decent gateway to better beer but my guess is if Brick brings them in it would be to take away market share from other craft beer.

*edit* my wife says she'll still drink #9 in the summer regardless.
