Ahhh yes, the ignorant steelback guy, mistaking daed guy for a bock when, in fact, it is an ale.........how foolish of me.........

despite the fact that Rogue describes it on it's website as:
"Dead Guy is a German-style Maibock made with Rogue's proprietary "PacMan" ale yeast."
and of course, it's classified as a bock on Ratebeer

http://www.rogue.com/brews.html#deadguy

but then again...Alexander Keith's think they make an IPA.

weird thing though, ratebeer has it (mis?)categorized as a bock, despite the commercial description which clearly says "ale yeast". gotta love Rogue!

Tasted much like a bock to me though. A bit reminiscent of the lovely Mill Street Helles Bock.

I always wondered how can this one be a maibock. Then I looked up the definition again and this is what they say:

German-Style Heller Bock/Maibock

The German word helle means light colored, and as such, a heller Bock is light straw to deep golden in color. Maibocks are also light-colored bocks. The malty character should come through in the aroma and flavor. Body is medium to full. Hop bitterness should be low, while noble-type hop aroma and flavor may be at low to medium levels. Bitterness increases with gravity. Fruity esters may be perceived at low levels. Diacetyl levels should be very low. Chill haze should not be perceived.

Original Gravity (ºPlato): 1.066-1.074 (16.5-18.5 ºPlato)
Apparent Extract/Final Gravity (ºPlato): 1.012-1.020 (3-5 ºPlato)
Alcohol by Weight (Volume): 5-6.4% (6-8%)
Bitterness (IBU): 20-38
Color SRM (EBC): 4-10 (8-20 EBC)

Dead Guy fits somewhere here.

More importantly, does anyone remember the old bottle where the dead guy would glow in the dark if held up to the light first?
Guess what? I got a fever. And the only prescription ... is more cowbell!

I remember the glowing bottle, and still have an empty in my bookcase. I also recall the LCBO claiming the bottles would glow long after the switch to the non-glow-in-the-dark bottles.

All part of their striving to be 'a more responsible retailer.' :-?

I did think this beer had bock-ish notes, very natural and German tasting somehow. Over there (Bavaria) beer tends to be this amazing, fresh, delicious, paradoxically complex yet uncomplicated stuff.

Been a while since I drank this ale, last time it was on tap and seemed different than the bottle I had this week but that may be explained away by memory lag. What I tasted this week off the shelf of an LCBO didn't do much for me. I wonder what niche' was so wanting to be satisfied that it would justify an ale with a maibock malt and hop profile.

I like Lagers, bocks particularlyand I love a well made ale but this Rogue brew was a bit of a let down as both an ale and a bock. To me at least. What surprised me the most was that at a meagre 6.5% ABV this brew did not hide the alcohol very well. It wasn't bad or offensive but it's not the type of brew I'd go out of my way to buy and keep stocked.

Dead Guy is a nice beer, though I still prefer Yellow Snow Ale and their Chocolate Stout. I just wish it were available all year in small town Ontario where I live instead of one month per year!

A minor quibble though. Given the trouble they must go to to put French language info on each and every bottle you'd think they could at least have the English part in, uh, English. The bottle I'm currently enjoying says "Greatfully dedicated to the Rogue in each of us". Should that not be "Gratefully" - even in the USA? According to my USA dictionary the answer is Yes! God Bless America - Land of the Free! But at least...please...get the spelling right!

...are you serious...spelling...get your nose out of your ass and focus on something of interest....I'll watch your every posting from now until eternity and God forbid you make a spelling mistake! I love bartowel but sometimes some of you guys (rabbit) can be an utter pain the ass...it'a a beer forum not a grammar forum...tell us about what you think about the beer....fuck the spelling!

...that's just my opinion and I could be wrong!

There's no need to lose your head over what I said was a "minor quibble". Besides, I did comment on the beer which I liked enough to buy two more bottles of today, and, yes, I'm grateful (not "greatful" ) for the opportunity to drink it. As to checking my spelling there's quite a difference between a spelling error on an informal talk forum like Bartowel and one on a product being shipped all over the world. You need to settle down. But hey, I'm over it and even though you think some of us here are "an utter pain in the ass" I think I speak for most Bartowellers when I say I'm still more than happy to put money in your pocket by buying any Rogues I come across. Anyway... I'm off to start on those Dead Guys :D
