Boshkung Brewing

Post by Cass »

Another new brewery near my cabin, up on Hwy 118 and Hwy 35 in Carnavon, north of Minden.

They're sharing space with a new restaurant called Rhubarb (used to be called 'That Place in Carnavon'). Restaurant is making an attempt at upscale, with a nice decor and menu, and a very scenic overlook of the river:

Just started brewing recently - nothing being packaged yet but at least one beer was available on tap at Rhubarb on the weekend. However, when I visited on Sunday night it was all sold out.

Nice to see two new breweries in the area (along with Haliburton Highlands) opening up and getting some initial enthusiasm from the local community.

I need to get up there again - still have a family cottage on Kushog but live too far away to make it worthwhile anymore, although a brewpub might pique my interest. Was "That Place" Mr Foggs many years ago? If so that would make "Mirror Lake" is the pond behind the old Castle Lumber.

Rhubarb/Boshkung is on the northeast corner of 35 and 118. The brewery is downstairs. Got a growler of Kellerbier when I was there. Quite palatable. Pretty much just a storefront.

HH is further east along 118 - toward Haliburton. It's down a funny, new-looking gravel road off to the right. It's a very small setup in a very new building. The pale ale I had had potential, but was undercarbonated and possibly the victim of flawed boil. I suspect that it wasn't intended to be 4.8%. Really nice people, though, and I will happily give them a second chance. Apparently their stuff is on tap at McKeck's.

I've now been to Boshkung twice and had their Keller and Kungaroo IPA. Both were better than average, with no off flavours. The IPA really wants to be a big, bold American IPA, but it's a tad on the malty side of things and the hops get held back a little.....maybe from the water, as Haliburton Highlands Pale Ale seems a little subdued as well, both especially in terms of aroma.

Boshkung does gangbuster business. I hope it's sustained for both them and HHB over the winter.

Had a growler of Boshkung IPA tonight. A nice beer.

We'll have them on at the Golden Taps this year.

Picked up a growler yesterday of their IPA. Nice brew and nice folks too. Looking forward to trying the rest of their line-up. Spent many years driving up to Lake Kennesis to a buddies cottage -- so they have a great location at #35 & #118.
