Growing hops

Post by Tapsucker »

I'm thinking about planting some hop vines this spring. I have a good location for several tall plants.

Is anybody here growing their own hops? Any tips or tricks to suggest?

One question I have is the interaction between varieties. I'd like to grow a few. Since they would all be female plants, I assume they would not interfere with each other.

A source of plants is also in question. Richter's herbs has a few varieties I'm interested in. Where else can they be purchased?
Brands are for cattle.

When I was in Toronto, I ordered mine from:
http://leftfieldstore.crannogales.com/catalogue.html

Now they're just north of me! I'll probably take a drive up next year, as I need to do some landscaping first.

If you want to get Rhizomes from Crannog you'll have to hurry to get your order in as they ship early in the season. I got Goldings and Centennials from them, 7 of 8 were established after 2 years with some small cones.

I expect this year will be better. Each year after they are established you will have to cut the new rhizomes in the spring otherwise they will keep extending without control. You can replant the rhizomes as you desire.

I bought cascade chinook and fuggle rhizomes from http://homebrew-supplies.ca/viartshop/ two years ago.

The first year they did alright. Year two I couldn't cut the offshoots fast enough. I swear you could watch them grow during the day.

I'm by no means a gardener but thes were so easy to grow. I didn't do a darn thing last summer other than trim the off shoots and they grew like crazy. So many hops. I should have tried to sell them as I didn't use them in any home brew.

This year I'm gonna try to split the roots and plant in another part of the yard.

I live in Keswick, Ontario and they do just fine. Imagine if I actually prepared the hop garden the way you're supposed to.

I decided to get them started in pots this year, so I put my order in at Left Fields...

"Hop Rhizome Sales end this week!

Please get your orders in by Friday, March 18 by phone, fax, email or paypal through the store. Late orders are not terribly likely to be able to get what they want.

The snow is finally leaving, we may be able to start digging in a matter of weeks!"

Hopefully they'll get a good start in pots this year:

Just got my shipment from fourhorses.ca. Easy to deal with.

Centennial

Hoping to get them in the ground this weekend.
Found this recipe which I'm going to use:

Surprise Easter gift for me, was out taking in some morning air and noticed that 10 of my hops plants have peirced, and one has got some major growth (12 vines, a couple over 6 inches) going on already.

Weather is great for keeping the vines well watered. Now if we can only have some nice sunshine in May-June, this bodes well for the next Harvest Ale!

I planted some cascade and mt.hood. Not looking for anything spectacular this year (they're in planters, so they won't get crazy root development)

Hey those were my two varieties back almost twenty years ago. I planted them too close and now have some kind of casc-hood thing going on.

I got them off of that Cleaver chap in Hamilton, he got his of of Dan I think in Burlington. Perhaps they are your progeny that have been gradually migrating westward!
