Okay, so I'm gearing up to do my second batch. What kind of extract (preferably dry only) should I use to get a nice, dark, Arrogant Bastard-ish red colour?

Always use the palest extract you can get. Use specialty malts to add colour/additional flavours.

Okay, so I'm wagering I need to steep some kind of caramel malt to make a reddish colour?

There are lots of different malts that can contribute red colour.

I wouldn't worry too much about colour, focus more on flavour.

Here's a handy Malt chart that includes approxiate SRM values

If you are going for Arrogant Bastard, I'd try steeping roughly 1/2 pound each of Special B, Biscuit, CaraMunich and Aromatic....and then enough pale DME to hit the desired OG. After that, it's piles of Chinook hops and a neutral yeast.
Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.

I'm going for something Arrogant Bastard-ish, thanks for the tip.

FYI, here's our AB clone from a few years back. it's not shown on the recipe, but there was more chinook dry hops in the keg, though i can't quite remember how much. simple recipe, just 2-row and dark crystal and a pile of chinook.

Yup, that is my knowledge of what goes into Arrogant Bastard as well. Tastes like it too.

Makes sense, since AB was borne of a mistake in batch quantity calculations for a simple pale ale.

this is what I always refer to for AG -> extract conversions: http://home.roadrunner.com/~brewbeer/extract/pres.pdf

my guess would be steep the crystal (or consider a partial mash) and convert the rest of the base malt to light dme. hops stay the same.

Cool, thanks again for all the info.
