9 oz. I can't wait to hear grub and viggo chime in for this one.

And how did it turn out? Does that 9oz include dry hop or is that all in the boil?

About 6.5 for me unless the batch Kwailo is mentioning is one that I was involved with but I don't recall... :D

Hopping as follows:

3oz Hallertauer FWH
2.9oz Hallertauer 30min
3oz Hallertauer 10min
3oz Hallertauer 0min
1.5oz Willamette dry hop 7 days

For those who were involved, this was my Hop Dam Harvest Ale that was on the SOB's beer advent calendar. Kwailo was on this batch as well.

That First Wort Hopping really gives a beer a different characteristic than if you wait for the boil

hmmm... are we counting fresh hops at their actual weight, or expected dried weight? because i've put as much as 21oz/5gal (42oz/10gal)...

but just for regular batches, i put 8.75oz/5gal in my gonzo clone and have used 8ish/5gal in various pale ales over the years.

I typically use right around 1lb per 5 gallons in my DIPAs and American Barleywines. I did one a couple years ago with over 2lbs in 5 gallons.

Can't say any of them were "too hoppy."

yeah, i find myself ramping up the hop additions in the more recent batches, especially for those big boys.

I will dig it up tonight and get back to you. I can tell you it was measured in a lab, and came out at 105 IBU which is pretty impressive for a real measurement, it is pretty tough to get over 80.

Ok, here it is. I designed this recipe for 6.5 gallons, knowing that hop absorption would bring down the actual volume considerably. Ended up with bang on 5 gallons in the keg.

All kettle additions were pellet hops:

2oz Cascade (mash)
1oz Centennial 90 min
3oz Columbus 90 min
2oz Centennial 30 min
2oz Cascade 20 min
2oz Amarillo 10 min
2oz Amarillo 5 min
3oz Amarillo flameout
1oz Centennial flameout

Dry hops
5.75oz Amarillo pellet
2oz Amarillo leaf
2oz Citra leaf
2oz Simcoe leaf
2oz Zeus leaf
2.25oz Columbus pellet

I don't normally go with such a bizarre hop schedule (I usually just do 60, 15, flameout and dry), but other people had some input.

1 POUND OF DRYHOPS!!!

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that we ran it through another 2oz of Amarillo leaf in a Randall when we tapped the keg at the Ales Open Awards Ceremony!

how did you control that much hops? bag 'em? or just have the worlds most unpleasant siphon/transfer? similar question about during the boil, but a good kettle screen will certainly help there.

I am also interested in hearing others experience with putting the hops in bags, tea balls, etc. vs putting them in loose. I worry that when they are confined, only the outside hops are actually providing anything.

At one point I picked up some pantyhose that was suggested to use as a type of filter (but never ended up using it). Wondering if that would work as a hop bag of sorts for dry hopping, with some marbles added to the bottom to wait it down.
