The Bar & Bench - Fri Oct 2nd

Post by GregClow »

On Friday Oct 2nd at Campbell House Museum (160 Queen St. W.), The Monk's Table (formerly Abbot On The Hill) is presenting The Bar & Bench, a gala fundraising event for The Canadian Athletes Now Fund.

See below for full details:

The History

In 1612, just outside of London England. The first English “Olimpicks” were under way. Robert Dover was a local lawyer who initiated the games. Dover was a legal advocate that believed greatly in a sense of community, and felt that his profession had an obligation to those less fortunate.

On Oct 2nd The Monk’s Table is proud to sponsor for the first time in Canada a version of the Dover Olimpics that will be named "The Bar and Bench" in honor of Robert Dover’s profession and his promotion of an event that has been cited by the British Olympic Association as a precursor to the Olympics as we know them today.

Traditional, unique, and hard to find English ales will be available, some imported for the first time in Canada for this event. Olympic Athletes will be in attendance as well as performing demonstrations on the Campbell House lawns.

The Cause

The Canadian Athletes Now Fund is a non-for-profit organization devoted solely to raising money and awareness for Canada’s amateur athletes. Since 1997, the not-for-profit Fund has helped Canada’s amateur athletes prepare for international summer and winter games. Monies donated to the Fund go directly to Canadian athletes to support their training, coaching, nutrition and living expenses in preparation for international competition. To compete for medals internationally, our athletes require year-round financial support. Our mission is to underwrite the expenses of as many Canadian amateur athletes as possible to help them remain competitive at a world-class level.

Events

A series of high-end food and beverage pairings will begin the evening. A panel of guest judges will rate the pairings and choose the top three. The guest judges are The Honourable A. A. Coulter Osborne, renowned wine critic Tony Aspler, Kevin Brauch from Thirsty Traveller, skater Josee Chouinard, and Stephen Beaumont, author and critic on beer and food pairings.

While the gastronomical events are ongoing, Canadian Athletes will perform routines and displays of their abilities.

· Wine and food pairings

· Beer and food pairings

· Half / half (beer and single malt pairings)

· Best English Ale ( Many of the Ales available are exclusive to The Monk’s Table)

The Monk’s Table, a gourmand house of recognition in Toronto, will provide all fare. A series of authentic English ales will be available that have never been available in Toronto and have been imported specifically for this event.

A wide range of high-end wines and single malts will be available. All products at the Bar and Bench are products The Monk’s Table serves on a daily basis.
