That Boutique-Y Whisky Company Whisky Holiday Calendar 2019

I believe a few of us got one of these, so I thought we could share thoughts on what we’ve sampled, as I’m interested in hearing Portwood’s educated opinions, as well as those like myself who are less so.

That said, I’m not a “burnt vanilla, hint of Central European oak” type of guys, so my thoughts probably won’t mean much to those that like that type of review.

And with that long windedness... thoughts?

Reservoir 2 year old: while I liked the barrelled woody notes I picked up I found this quite hot, as in it could use much more aging to mellow out. By the end of the dram I was overwhelmed; I found it less enjoyable as I drank it.

James E Pepper 3yo Oloroso Cask Rye: I’m not typically a rye fan, I find most have a one-dimensional spicy characteristic, however this was quite lovely. Spiciness was smoothed out by the sweetness of what I assume is the sherry cask, with a hint of vanilla and caramel too, which hides the 50%abv better than yesterday’s whiskey.

Thank you for the kind words but i've been fighting a cold/flu for the last week and can't smell/taste much. Therefore, I've put off cracking these open.
Being a cheap bassturd accountant at heart I'm probably going to return the box and hoping to buy it back after Christmas - I'm betting LCBO will have trouble selling them and will discount them after the holidays.
(I'll be careful to monitor stock, though, just in case. FOMO will win out in the end)

FYI. if you're on Instagram, the folks at TorontoWhiskySociety are doing daily tasting notes if you feel like following along

Maybe I’m in the wrong area but I don’t see any.

Nvmd, I just saw it the latest ones in the “stories”. Too bad I can’t see the previous ones.

As predicted, though a few weeks ahead of when I thought they would do it, the set is now 30% off: $139.95
(Still >2000 available, no need to rush, they'll probably discount again)
me thinks they overbought & overpriced this one

ANNNND ... proof LCBO bought too many/released them too close to first day of advent/priced them too high...
marked down again to $99.95
at 100 bucks - even though the whiskies in this pack pale in comparison to the UK version - this is a now good buy

The link

It's not a bad deal - 720ml of various whisky with tons of variety for $99.95.

Will it discount more? Happy New Years everyone!

yes, but if the LCBO set was the same as in the UK it wouldn't have to be marked down 50%.

11 of the 24 whiskies in the UK set are older than 12 years, only one of the LCBO set is older than 12 (a cheap grain whisky)

so, while age isn't necessarily an indication of quality, most whisky enthusiasts would take the UK set at double the price of the LCBO set.

The reason I ordered one when they were listed at was because I thought I was getting the UK set - if I knew which whiskies the LCBO was selling I would not have bought it!

Wow, it's really encouraging so far! ;-)

Still I feel compelled to give it the old 'college try' to begin to educate my palate in an extremely low financial / volume commitment scenario. This will be cool... Cheers.

I specifically picked those 4 to get them out of the way first - i like to save the best for last ... grain whiskies tend not to be my faves
