The Bar Towel

My wife is heading to Las Vegas on Tuesday. In return for letting her go to “Sin City” without me, I asked her to bring some beer back for me. I believe they are staying right across the street from Caesar’s Palace. I was just wondering if anyone knew of a good liquor/beer store that would have a good selection of Micros, possibly sold in singles? I’m hoping for some Alesmith! Are they sold in bombers?

Alesmith is hard to get outside of SoCal, based on my experience in San Francisco. I looked everywhere I went, and although my search was far from exhaustive, I didn't find any...

According to the "Places" section at RateBeer.com, Lee's Discount Liquor seems to be the best place to buy beer in Vegas:

The pickings are indeed slim there. The area of course is entertainment central and package stores don't fit in that environment. There are a couple of small stores on the strip that sell sundries and convenience foods and they have a beer selection but not a large one. Still, a walk up and down the strip from Caesar's Palace should uncover them. If your wife asks the bell or doormen at the hotel I am sure they can direct her to the closest one. I recall seeing Sierra Nevada Ale, Anchor Steam, Fat Tire and other good quality craft beers at these small stores.

A second option: each hotel has its own sundries shop at which some liqour and beer is available. Again the choice will not be large but there may be the odd good beer to be found.

Third option: there is a chain of liquor stores (about 6) in Las Vegas - Lee's, mentioned above - but the closest one to the strip in that area is a couple of miles away. So a car is necessary to access it. I never did get there but know they have a large beer selection.

Last idea: the bars at Caesar's will have a good micro beer selection. The barmen may sell a couple of closed bottles if asked nicely.

At one time there was a microbrewery in a small casino but I heard it closed. They sold their beers in bottles and they were good.

The reviews seem to be contridictory regarding singles. A couple say that there are few/no singles available, while another says that there are 6-packs in the fridges and singles on the shelves. Maybe they are referring to different locations of Lee's?

Whatever the case, I hope she can find a few interesting things for you.

When you are in Vegas, you must go out in to the desert. Also, a trip to Hoover Dam is well-worthwhile.

I agree with Joe. The drive to the Hoover Dam is pretty spectacular, as is the dam itself. Also, consider a trip to Death Valley. That was pretty stunning as well. I went in January, so it was a comfortable temperature. I'm not sure what it would be like in October.

If you head to Lee's on W Lake Mead Blvd., Make sure it is actually West. I made the mistake of just going on Lake Mead Blvd. and after the time it took to drive far enough to realize Lee's wasn't there, my fellow car occupants were too beat to head all the way in the other direction. Now THAT was disappointing!

Also you can stop by Monte Carlo Casino brewpub. I've been there a few years ago and enjoyed some of their ales.
