Alley Kat Orange Dragon. DIPA (bottle) - very orangey, thanks to the Summit hops. The Dragon series isn't hopbomb-ish, but has produced some tasty beers

Howe Sound Father John Winter Ale (tap) - nice malty 7% winter ale with subdued spices. Very drinkable for its size.

Ommegang Three Philosophers (tap) - too much spicy phenols, and the kriek addition sticks out like a sore thumb. I'm usually a fan of this beer when aged in the bottle, but didn't really care for it in this incarnation.

MiKkeller Santa's Little Helper (tap) - now this is the kinda quad I was looking for. Great depth of malt complexity, restrained sweetness, dry finish, smooth alcohol. Not a fan of Mikkeller in general, but this rocks!

That's quote a bold statement. I had one of these a couple of weeks ago and thought it was really good but nowhere near one of the best barrel aged beers I have ever had. I actually preferred the non-BA 2010 that I tasted side-by-side with it.

Different strokes for different folks.
how many rating does the BA 2010 have on BA? i was only the second one to rate thebeer on RB.

the beer in my mind was perfect, the bourbon barrel was up front but not in any way obnoxious. the base beer was still vibrant, layered, complex but crazily drinkable fora beer this size.

what number was your bottle?

we had 594/700
I didn't include the bottle number in my review on BA. Might be in my notes at home.

It was a very good beer. I rated it a 4.1/5. Just wouldn't crack my top 10 bourbon barrel aged beers.

Barking Squirrel, it had a strong, almost minty-like taste (reminded me of toothpaste or some U.S. rye whiskey), lots of hop but out of synch with the malt IMO. I won't revisit.

Jai Alai was my favorite from the trip. I'm glad I didn't break the 6-pack!

Last night with dinner at Wvrst, Church Key's Holy Cow Chocolate Milk Stout (I believe that is the full name). A first-rate sweet stout and the use of chocolate nibs is hardly evident, a plus in my book. (Stouts in which coffee or cocoa stick out taste "wrong" to me, but that's me). A half-pint is plenty. Wellington County Imperial Stout was tasting very good too, it tastes as if kept in the tank for quite a while with a winy soy-like edge.

Cracked a year old bottle of Pothole Filler last night, roasty notes were a bit muted, but the beer had definitely become more integrated, with no hot alcohol presence at all. Definitely going to try and pick up another before it disappears

Its still trading for fairly cheap down here. Let me know if you want me to start hoarding.

BTW, the 2011 is many times its inferior. Just something with the 2010 that balances out so much better.

Found myself unexpectedly off work really early, so I decided to do some Christmas shopping. Just so happened I was shopping close the Brain in good ol' Hammertown, so I stopped in for....

Nickel Brook Pinot Noir Barrel Aged Impy Stout-draught (super duper vinous)
Black Oak Nutcracker Porter (my first ever, remarkably)

Last night with andrewrg, Weebay, and TheSevenDuffs:

We had a five year vertical of Darkness last night – absolutely phenomenal. Thanks to TheSevenDuffs for sharing this with us.

Image

The 08 was very sweet and harsh with flavours of licorice and soy sauce, while the 12 was lighter on the roast and quiet hoppy. Before we were done, though, we thought we'd honour a member of our forum with a blend of all 5 vintages 08-12

Image

Shockingly, this may have been one of the favourites. Followed by:

Well Read Temptress
BORIS Royale
Barrel Aged Naked Evil

and then I had to leave early. Thanks for the great night!

Thanks for posting these pics! You didn't miss anything except for us drinking what was left straight from the Darkness bottles like gangsters so it wouldn't go to waste. lol.

My personal ranking of the Darkness was: '11, '12, '10, '08, '09.

The hop profile of the '12 was really nice and really interesting - resiny pine that was really fresh and bold and I think the vertical really helped to accentuate the hop profile.

The '11 was the perfect balance to me. Still fairly hoppy with a nice malt profile.

The '09 had a strange astringency to me but the others didn't really taste that.

The '08 was extremely sweet and did have a bit of a soy sauce taste to it. That said, it was still drinking very nicely.

All in all this was a really fun experiment and the first time I have ever done a vertical of this size. Hopefully the next time we do one of these we can include more Bar Towelers.

The affectionately nicknamed Gillman was the best of them all.

It was really interesting to see the point where the hops faded and then the flavour moved towards the sweet.

I'd be curious to know if the recipe changed from year to year.
