i had one of the 2011 in early dec. this year, was much better than it tasted "fresh".phirleh wrote:A Dec 2011 Garrison Spruce, I like this one with a bit of age, fresh you don't get much spruce.
That can be good or bad depending on your affinity for spruce.

I got a BDT barley wine in a trade in the summer, a little pricey at about 15 bucks for a bomber, but a good brew.

Pretty damn good compared to the last couple visits to that bar. NC RIS is still easily the #2 Ontario stout for me, after Hellwoods. I've heard the majority of the batch is being aged in barrels, which I think is a damn shame.

A shark on whisky is mighty risky. A shark on beer is a beer engineer.

I'm with you. I cannot understand the fad of barrel aging. I want my beer to taste like beer not whiskey or Pinot whatever. Admittedly I haven't tried too many but those that I did try did not inspire me to try any more.Cale wrote:@ the Judge w/ Streets

As for what I am drinking now... I am working on a Keith's Red Amber Ale ( and I do mean working! ) that was part of an office Secret Santa gift but I have a St Ambroise Oatmeal Stout and a Church Key West Coast Pale Ale airing in the fridge if I can make it through the Keith's. I had only ever seen the Church Key at the brewery before so it was a nice surprise to find it at the Crossroads LCBO.

First beer in a while last night after being sick, but found a bomber of Bellwoods Last Splash (yikes!) Kind of past it's prime, but still pretty drinkable.
(Sounds like Niagara College is doing some awesome brews!)

Last night I had the Nickel Brook Old Kentucky Bastard.
This was a really interesting beer. After having the Winey Bastard (Pinot Noir Barrel Aged), which was so barrel-forward that it tasted more like a wine than a beer, I was expecting a bourbon bomb. This was anything but. The barrel qualities were very subdued and there was a strange oaky astringency present that I often find in Jack Daniel's barrel aged beers (not sure if that is what Nickel Brook used). I found the same thing in a recent bottle of Jack Daniel's barrel aged Tempest that I had.
I am curious what others thought of this beer (if anyone has had it yet).
