Had the Plaid Dragon at the brewery in February earlier this year when I was out there and it was fantastic. Great people and hopefully we start to see some more from them in Ontario!

Sipped on some tasty beers from Ashton Brewing today at the Ottawa Beer Market. Vanilla Stout was good, but was pleasantly surprised by their IPA...really more of a sessionable pale ale, but tasty all the same.

Also, tried White Water Oatmeal Stout, but found it to be quite underwhelming...hopefully their other beers are crafted with a little more skill.
I don't always drink beer ... because sometimes my friends win and we have to go to macro-only establishments.

I had a 2012 Mill St. Barley wine last night, which was a little underwhelming.

I also had a 2008 Rogue imperial porter, which was simply outstanding.

Greetings from Warsaw, Poland.

I just came back to my hotel after a terrific pit stop. Went to the Kompania Piwna Podwale restaurant bar in the Old Town.

A litre and then a half litre of superbly fresh Pilsner Urquell (they sell oceans of it), washing down delicious beef tartare.

Urquell on tap is one of the great beers in the world. I usually favour ales such as bitters, pale ales and IPAs. However, a fresh Pilsner Urquell is just a little bit of heaven. Yum. Goin' back tomorrow.

Couldn't agree more viz. Urquell. Even here fresh on draft it is excellent but in or near to place of origin it would be superlative.

Drinking now a (personal) blend of Amsterdam Wet Hop; that rye strong porter from Europe (Norway I think); Guinness Special Export 8%; and the New Zealand pumpkin beer, Great Punkin, we got recently. Basically 2:1:1:.5, respectively.

The result is a Spiced Black IPA with a ton of depth and a fine bittersweetness. Or you could call it a Spiced Porter perhaps. None of the beers on their own were really to my taste with a big exception for the rye porter, but the blending is superb.

A friend brought the Guinness from Europe. It was very soy-like, probably from overage (like Sinha can be at the end of its freshness window). The Punkin gushed on opening and was dry, it tasted like some of the dextrins may have been used up in a further fermentation, but the spice taste was good, it was almost like spiced dry red wine. The Amsterdam Wet Hop was fresh and right but I just didn't love the taste, a bit oniony. Yet, when you blend these in the right way with a beer I do admire on its own - the rye porter - the result was really good.

Gary

P.S. I thought the Great Punkin on its own was a lot like Weyerbacher Imperial Pumpkin Ale for those who know that. Nice beers but I find the spice - as in most pumpkin ales - is overdone. Hence my use of beers like this in blending.
