Was at a small BBQ tonight. Quite a few coolers etc. Of the beers I saw, not so surprising was Bud Light, Canadian, Sleeman Draught, and Busch.

Somewhat more of a surprise......Old Vienna.

I had Hogsback Lager, Spearhead Hawaiian IPA, Dead Elephant, and Crazy Canuck.

Drinking my first Spearhead HSPA out of a bottle. Not impressed at all. Love this on tap but won't be buying bottles any time soon.

I'm visiting my inlaws on the west coast of WA. Unfortunately I'm out here for a funeral, so I'm not going out of my way to pick anything in particular up...but I've been able to get these from the local co-op:

Boulevard Brewing Double-Wide IIPA
Deschutes Mirror Pond Pale Ale
Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA
Dogfish Head Saison du BUFF
Firestone Walker Double Jack IIPA
Goose Island Sofie
Great Divide 18th Anniversary Oak Aged IIPA
Great Divide Espresso Oak Aged Yeti
Great Divide Hercules IIPA
Russian River Pliny the Elder (stumbled across this at Quinn's in Seattle)

Still to drink:

Cascade The Vine
Lost Abbey Deliverance
Lost Abbey Serpentine's Stout

And bottles of Cascade Sang Noir to bring home with me, plus whatever else I pick up in the week I have left here.

Today at Blue Monk & Coles:

Elysian Dragonstooth Stout (draught) - damn good beer
Mikkeller Hop Burn High (draught)
Firestone Walker Double Jack (draught)
Sierra Nevada Hoptimum (draught)
Oskar Blues G'Knight (draught)
Sierra Nevada Beer Camp Floral IPA (bottle)

That Thelonious Burger at Blue Monk is just ridiculous.

Publican house ale
Publican Square nail pale ale
Founders Porter
Russian River & Sierra Nevada Brux- It was a good beer, but the brett character was lacking. Had a 2 year bottle of orval the other night, and both seemed very similar. Be interesting to see where my second bottle goes in a year or 2.

Yesterday at Mad Mex Oakland and Sharp Edge Creekhouse:
Ithaca Partly Sunny (draught) - excellent thirst quencher after walking (climbing?) around the university area
Sierra Nevada Southern Hemisphere Harvest Fresh Hop Ale (draught) - just as bright, citric, and fresh-tasting as I remember
The Duck-Rabbit ESB (draught) - very English in character with the hops adding a crisp spiciness and some dryness but not much else
Flying Dog El Dorado Single Hop IIPA (bottle) - good balanced DIPA
The Duck-Rabbit Milk Stout (bottle) - layers of roasted, liquorice, leather, and ashy flavours with only a hint of sweetness. A world beater.

Do these guys make great stuff in general? I keep seeing their beers down here in Pittsburgh but haven't tried one yet since I don't know anything about them and haven't heard much either. I'll keep an eye out for the Dragontooth but I'm curious to know if their other beers are worth seeking out.

Small EBGA gathering last night celebrating 8 years in this great country, and had a mish-mash of stuff:

Ugly Duck/Sherbrooke "Hans Across The Water" Imperial Vanilla Coffee Chocolate porter
. Very, very tasty porter, with a good chunk of dusty, dark chocolate coming through. The 1.5L bottle didn't last long.

Uinta Brewing Labyrinth Black Ale - Great liquorice flavours, backed by nice balanced roast.

Then we opened a couple of tawny ports; Taylor Fladgate 10 Year & Fonseca 10 Year. As usual, Taylor Fladgate is too sweet, Fonseca is just more refined and complex.

Tin Whistle Killer Bee Dark Honey Ale - Meh

The the reason for the gathering - Fonseca Guimaraens 1988 Vintage Port. As the cork was failing it had to be opened now. Still a very young port, with a warming, sweet alcohol coming through. Great earthy, raisin, eucalyptus flavours shining through. Opened up wonderfully through the night, even after being decanted 4 hours earlier!

Unibroue Blonde de Chambly - tasty, spicy, refreshing

Shipyard Brewing Double Old Thumper - Well balanced old ale, reminded me of a Fullers Vintage on steroids.

Widmer Bros Barrel Aged Brrrbon 2010 - Bags of oak still coming through, with a nice heat from the bourbon at the end.

Xellent Swiss Rye Vodka - surprisingly smooth. I'm not a vodka drinker but could drink this all night long.

Then it was a Glenlivet The Balvenie 17 Yr aged in Madeira casks - A hot whisky, tamed down with just the slightest touch of water.

Glenrothes 1998 - a touch smoother than the Glenlivet.
