Hot Weather Drinking

Post by Bobsy »

I just read an article in the star about how the hot summer weather has increased beer sales by 11.5% over last Summer.

http://thestar.blogs.com/weather360/201 ... glass.html

A couple questions spring from this - have you guys been drinking more to combat the heat, and if so what's the beer of choice to cool you down and quench your thirst?

About the same as every summer.

This summer the beers have been Muskoka Pilsner Light & Hefe, Steamwhistle, Grand River Galt Knife, Nickelbrook Green Apple Pilsner, Denison's Weisse, Perroni, Devil's Pale Ale, FM Hoptical Illusion, GL Orange Peel, Pilsner Urquell, Czechvar, Creemore Kellerbier... a few more that escape my memory at the moment.

I've also been having various white wines in between beer sessions.

At home, I've been cycling through:
-Muskoka Cream and Hefe (same as mint re:the canned Denison's)
-FM Hoptical
-GR Galt Knife (although I find bottles older than a month tail off sharply and develop an unpleasant sourness. When FRESH, though, this one is ON)
-King Pils
-GL Orange Peel and Canuck (though bottles of Canuck still on the shelves are past their prime)
-Mill St. Lemon Tea
-the occasional can of Steam Whistle (a good fallback, as it is in every BS and LCBO. Still overpriced, though)
-Black Oak Summer Saison and 10BY
-Amsterdam Boneshaker
-whatever's in growlers at Duggan's and Mill St.

Would love to open my fridge and see some Smashbomb...

I've had cans that were fantastic. I've had cans that were overly lemony. The last time I bought it had an intense creamy banana aroma yet somehow didn't have any banana flavour. It's truly a great example of the style when you get a good can, but there are some serious issues with consistency. I assume it takes a toll on this unpasteurised beer moving through the LCBO's unrefridgerated distribution system.

I think the Muskoka hefe is solid and underrated. More importantly, it's also very consistent.

Yup. Still amazing on tap, though.

My only complaint with the Muskoka Hefe is that it seems a little too sweet to be truly quenching.

Cameron's: Lager, Cream Ale. Never got into them before but they seem to fit the bill for hot weather.

Black Oak Pale
Southern Tier IPA
Iron Duke now and then.

You know what? Sometimes cold and wet is more important than flavour.

I wonder if the economy has influenced it?

Anyway, I'm at least 2 standard deviations from the norm. I've been cleaning out my cellar, so I've mostly been drinking higher alcohol stuff!
