Crazy Cover Songs...

Post by JeffPorter »

Last night on the Strombo show on Radio 2, it was all about covers.

I heard this song a few years ago, and then again last night, and can't get it out of my damn head...so I thought I'd subject you to it, as well.

Actually I love it.

It's a bluegrass group called The Gourds and they're covering Snoop's Gin and Juice.

If you like hip hop, being sung to bluegrass... well, this your thing...

Enjoy!

(If you're not familiar with Snoop's, uh, repertoire, listener discretion advised...)

Original, which is great:

A cover which most definitely qualifies as crazy:

Yeah, Tori Amos is pretty great at taking "hard" songs and softening them up. I'm pretty sure she did cool a version of Smells Like Teen Spirit after Cobain died.

Australian radio station Triple J releases some pretty incredible in studio performances, including a video series called "Like A Version."

Sarah Blasko did an incredible version of Hey Ya! by OutKast. Almost better than the original. That voice... damn.

Buy records. Eat pizza. Drink beer. Die.

How about a ridiculously cheesy power metal cover of Michael Sembello's "Maniac"?

The Aussies seem to have a knack for this stuff
Andrew Denton on TripleM in Sydney in the early 2000s did 2 albums of a "Musical Challenge" - throwing bands songs outside their style
If you can find these Cds/torrents there are some real gems

Neil Finn - Billie Jean

or this

Chris Cornell - Billie Jean (not Denton)

and although he is nobody in NA, Mark Lizotte (Diesel) was big when I was in Oz.

http://www.covermesongs.com/ is great for finding neat covers. i'm especially fond of their "5 good covers" series, where they take a well known song and post 5 (often vastly) different cover versions. some are pretty far from the mark, but others are damn good!

posted by them yesterday, but a long time favourite (both the original and this cover). Pixies covering Jesus and Mary Chain: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7F5TZ7z7tJs

Tangerine Dream covering Lakes of Pontchartrain.

Completely out of left field. I think it's the only recording they ever made with vocals.
