What's going to be the new 'gimmicky beer' this summer?

What's going to be the new 'gimmicky beer' this summer?

Post by Guybrush »

Just wondering what your thoughts are on "what's next?". For example 5 years ago, or so, it was low-calorie beers; Molson Ultra, Sleeman Clear, etc. Then it seemed White/Wheat beers took over for couple of years; Rickard's White, Keith's White, etc. Then for the last 2 years it seems the Lime Beers took over; Bud Light with Lime, Miller Chill w/ lime, Red Baron w/ Lime, Labatt Blue Lime, Big Rock w/ Lime, etc. I'm not sure what was before the low-calorie beer trend, anyone remember?

So what's next? Obviously this pertains to the the next mass-produced flavoured/coloured swill, and not really the craft-beer industry stuff... but none-the-less, what could it be?

If you look at flavour alone, the low calorie stuff was flavourless, the wheat beers where orange/coriander, and then lime for the lime-beers. Do they just drop a new flavour in beer, and hope it sells? Or bring a forgotten style forward, and put it on the main stage? Or do we see the cousins of beer rise up? Is it the year for Mead, Cider, or Perry?

"What do I think", you ask? "That's a very good question!", I respond. I think I'll put my money on..... Schwarzbier! Nothing like a nice refreshing dark lager! And if that's the case, than Cameron's 266 will become wildly popular, and take the brewery to new heights. Invest your money in their shares now, while the price is still low!

Happy Drinking...

And also - I think you'll see a lot of cider being pushed this spring/summer:

I hope they don't package this in clear bottles. Could make for some awkward returns:

Tree introduced Dukes cider last year, and it should be in Ontario in the next couple months. They use local Okanagan apples and it's not packed full of chemicals. It's an easy drinking dry cider. I find it a bit light and bubbly, but I'm sure that will appeal to a larger market.

Now that said, cider is not beer.

Showed that to my wife - she laughed, couldn't believe how horrible an Ad for Minhas can be.

Living Sky Winery in Saskatoon makes a killer, all-natural cider (3 Day Dog) and rhubarb cider (Puddle Jumper). They use local apples and rhubarb.

I remember now what the thing was before 'low calorie' beers. It was "Honey Beer"! Remember "Honey Beer"? Labatt Genuine Honey, Lakeport Honey, Algonquin Honey, even Wellington Beehive Honey.... oh man... those were the days....
