And not a bad rant it was! It's amazing how much someone can say while saying nothing. There's no need to respond. Cyrill's statement speaks for itself. Just like Jim Flaherty.

Cheers, Joe.

Hey Cyrill, what does any of this have to do with a review of Smuttynose Robust Porter? It would seem more appropriate for you to start your own topic, whatever that might be, and then I can choose not to look at it. When I go into Beer Reviews and see Smuttynose Robust Porter I expect to see reviews of Smuttynose Robust Porter, not your drivel....now, do you have an opinion on Smuttynose Robust Porter? If not, get out of this topic!

(a) I think he was embarrased to start a new topic.

(b) WRT smuttynose, I, a lover of stouts and porters was not very impressed with it (read as mediocre but not bad) I thought its taste was very temperature sensitive which for a porter is rather unfortunate. Overall I did feel it made a good addition to the S&P collection.

(c) I think the real problem with the LCBO is that they are happy with high volume efficiency over high quality simply because it lends to a simpler bureaucracy. I don't think bringing in low volume selections actually affects the bottom line.

Immotius, with all due respect, you may be a lover of stouts and porters but your appreciation for the styles is apparently based upon some narrow knowledge and experience you have had with some specific styles. How anyone can call Robust Porter "mediocre" is beyond me. This product is an exemplary example of the style. I appreciate the fact that personal taste is a very subjective issue but I can appreciate a well made beer even if I don't like the style. The fact that you consider this product to be "mediocre" suggests that you really don't know porter which is further confirmed by the fact that you didn't point out what it is that you found flawed about this product other than the fact that YOU didn't like it. A beer review should shed some light on the reasons for your dislike. If you have nothing to offer in that regard, then it's not a beer review because, frankly, who cares if you liked it or not...tell us why you liked it or didn't like it...no offence!

I hope you didn't take any personal offense.

I found that the Robust Porter is very temperature sensitive. I appreciate that beer is temperature sensitive, but this porter goes from a nutty bitter flavour to a sweet flavour in one glass. And being a porter I should be able to enjoy it at my pace (and not have to drink from a thermos bottle.)

I should further add that I didn't dislike the beer.

Immotius, no offense taken...perhaps I'm a bit too passionate in my postings but I really do like this beer and many others agree with me. At last year's U.S. Beer Tasting Championships it went up against some of the best Porters in the U.S. and was not only selected as Northeast Champion Porter but Grand Champion Porter of the U.S. so they've got to be doing something right.

I'm sitting here enjoying the last of my stash of smuttynose, and in my opinion, the fact that flavours change as the beer warms is part of its character and part of what makes it great. this is by far one of the best beers the lcbo has got in the last while.

Hey Rabbit,

No problem! And your comments were valid anyway. I didn't really explain myself very well the first time.
