Whirlfloc (Irish Moss) Question

Post by lister »

I've brewed two one gallon batches of a lager a day apart. I have some Whirlfloc tablets and am using a quarter of the tablet per gallon. I completely forgot to use it for the first batch but remembered for the second which proved to be an interesting experiment. For the second batch I put the quarter tablet in with 10 minutes left in the boil. Both carboys are in a 50-54F mini-fridge right now.

I noticed a day after the second one was in the fridge that it had cleared very nicely while the first one was still cloudy. Should I have removed the second beer at that point to another carboy? A day or so later it was cloudy like the first batch.

Now two weeks later both are looking pretty clear.

So, for using Whirlfloc, do I need to do anything else after the boil when it clears up initially? Or just leave it? Am I just completely wasting my money on the Whirlfloc?

1/4 tab per gallon is more than you really need, so that's the only place i'd say you're "wasting your money" on it. i use a half tab in 10gal and it works great. of course, if you're doing 1gal batches it might not be easy to divide them much further anyway, so 1/4 won't hurt. i have used 1 tab per 5 or 10gal batch in the past, but when i read that i can stretch them further i went with it.

Cool, thanks for that. I'll probably do some more side-by-side comparisons with the remaining tablets to see if it's even worth buying more.
