Thus spake Madame Thatcher! ;)

No I pointed out a CANADIAN cheddar selling in Buffalo was far less expensive than it would be here. I mean Jer, what gives there? Is the US government subsidizing unpasteurized Quebec cheese now, a superior product that I've never seen in Ontario?

Retail milk prices here took a dive the time we got rid of the milk board if I recall, which may indicate that too much regulation hurts commerce.

Hmmm... I guess I should have stated that was the "Canadian Restaurant and Foodservices Association", because that was my point.

The CRFA themselves argue that their pricing is not competitive.

Companies that make pizza (frozen/fresh) for retail (not restaurant sale) get a 30% cut so they can stay competitive in the global marketplace... which in turn has has hurt the pizza restaurants. And it's true, I was never a fan of frozen pizza, but get yourself a pizza stone and the fresh stuff is a very good value!

Should the system be changed? I really don't know... but as it stands, cheese just isn't a good value at a restaurant.

Sure there's minimum prep for a cheese plate, but it's always going to cost you considerably more than it would if you had just bought it yourself. It doesn't matter if it's Volo, or some place on Upper James.

Nice little review in the Star, going to make it more difficult than ever to get elbow space at the bar :)

I've come to realie that the only times I made it to Volo the past 2 years were for A) a special beer event or B) when I could get there at 4pm to settle in and have a nice, long session.

Tempted to try the new menu items now though! The burger I saw tweeted about sounds tasty.

Had a couple of pints of House Bitter last night. Very good. I like the A to Z tap system. I may bring some friends and play scrabble. All new drinking games are possible :)

I know. There are so many possibilities. The other night we were talking about having to drink your name. Glad I didn't get hung with "Christopher" or "Zachariah" or something -- that would be a bender!

I think the burger may now be gone with the introduction of the new menu, which is a shame. It was small-ish, but delicious, and the perfect size for one who wants to be able to drink a few beers before/after/during. Fully planned on having that again sometime!

It would be nice to have burgers, etc. When I visit, I'm there for a while and substantial food helps.

That's great news....look forward to having it again. I agree that something more substantial than chacuterie is important with a tap list like that!

Oh yeah. The unsung Volo burger is pretty consistent with a lightly charred, genuine beefy taste, and toppings that all work with it.
There are some awful, flavorless mush burgers around Toronto that get undeserved good write ups (Burger's Priest, Gourmet Burger Co.) I can't even taste the ketchup or anything on a Priest burger, it's so freaking mushy and oily.

Stopped by for a few last night. The burger is still there...weekends only according to the menu. The price is up, which is unfortunate...tough to justify $15 for a small burger, pickle and a few olives (the side of a small salad and nacho chips appears to be gone). I almost wonder if they're trying to discourage anyone ordering food unless it's the charcuterie type stuff (easy to prepare)???

The tap list is incredible, obviously....
