Hannibal (television series)

Post by mixedup »

Anyone watch this and see last week's episode? There was a short conversation between Hannibal and one of the psychologist characters that revolved around barrel-aged beer (brewed by Hannibal).

Really not sure what the point of my post was, but was surprised to hear that on TV at the time (the female character who prefers beer to wine, Hannibal suggesting something 'in between'....etc).

Yeah, I was both surprised and impressed by that. The consulting chef on the show is José Andrés, a well known chef from Spain, so the food and drink aspects of the show have been pretty great - even despite the fact that he's supposed to be cooking with human flesh.

Really excellent show all around, actually. Shockingly good for a network drama. I'm hoping it gets picked up for another season.

Looks amazing, very feature film-like production and anyway what IS a good beer pairing for human thymus and pancreas? :-?

(Don't say Rogue Dead Guy Ale.)

The series appears straightforwardly & simply (faithfully?) derivative of the books and the four main Hannibal movies (five movies if you include Manhunter, later re-made as Red Dragon.) The Mads Mikkelson casting is not so bad but I was surprised at some of the direction - The Danish Mikkelson is not always a very clear (English) speaker and this seems totally unlike the articulate, purring speech of the Dr. Lecter character played by Sir Anthony Hopkins.

(Let's not even get into why Gaspard Ulliel's Hannibal had a completely different accent than Hopkins since the young Frenchman did manage a very challenging acting turn on "Hannibal Rising" - come on, it was a pretty satisfying movie for all its flaws.)

And Hopkins had a totally different accent to the original Hannibal; Brian Cox.

This TV show does have a slight feel of the original, Manhunter movie, especially the Will Graham character.

I've really enjoyed it as well....Mads Mikkelsen is amazing and I hope he gets some sort of award/recognition for his performance! Haven't read the books, so I've basically associated Hopkins with Hannibal and I find this refreshing.

You're right....the whole food thing is well done!

If it weren't for Hopkins' Oscar-winning performance in "Lambs" the entire face-eating, mask-wearing Hannibal franchise might have been different; perhaps even the way author Thomas Harris wrote the books that followed vastly expanded Hannibal's character based entirely on this. I think the role 'became' Sir Hopkins in a way and the two took over the whole thing.

I'm stunned that movie failed because - hello - great book AND Michael Mann has a shipload of style as a director... but was he the right style for the story? I thought Ridley Scott's for example was brilliant for "Hannibal." I didn't mind Miann's film but I honestly enjoyed his other films more.
