Beer Cocktails for the Summer
Beer Cocktails for the Summer
Lately I've been experimenting with creating Beer Cocktails, mostly taking a Weiss/Wheat beer base and adding fruit/fruit juices, I have to say, the results are typically quite good, has anyone else tried this, any favorite combinations? I sort of got the idea to start trying this after enjoying the Unibroue Ephemere's so much, and yet not being able to get them readily...
Examples:
1) Hoegarten & Ribena - Start with about an ounce of Ribena (Concentrated Black Currant Juice), then pour in a bottle of Hoegarten, very nice...
2) Blueberry Wheat at Beer Bistro - I tried this when I popped in last week, they put about 2 or 3 ounces of blueberry juice, about the same amount of fresh blueberries, and then fill'er up with Big Rock's Grasshopper Wheat, very tasty!
3) Schnieder Weisse & Cranberry/Apple Cocktail - Tried this at the cottage on the weekend, again, quite tasty!
4) Guinness & Steam Whistle - This is essential a ba$tardized Black & Tan, took a pint of Guinness and a bottle of Steamwhistle to create 2 drinks and it came out very tasty, like a Dark Lager, I was suprised that despite there being more Guinness in the mix, and Guinness being such a flavorful beer that the malt flavours in the Steamwhistle still came through...

Recently with a friend we tried Propeller Porter with a splash of 57% abv London Dock, a Demerara rum popular in Newfoundland. This was really good, and it was only later I read that some pubgoers in Yorkshire make something similar with the local Mather's Black Beer and rum called a "rum black". In a way it makes a porter or stout more like an Imperial Stout. I was tempted to try the same experiment with a stronger stout but that seemed more appropriate for winter.

Interesting... I happen to have both of those in my fridge at the moment. Maybe I'll give it a try tonight. I suppose I only have to mix a small amount, so as not to waste it if I don't like it!JWalter wrote:3) Schnieder Weisse & Cranberry/Apple Cocktail - Tried this at the cottage on the weekend, again, quite tasty!
BTW, what kind of a ratio did you try for that one?
Didn't use any exact measurements, certainly more beer than juice, I'd say prob. about 3/4 Weisse and 1/4 Juice...Andicus wrote:BTW, what kind of a ratio did you try for that one?JWalter wrote:3) Schnieder Weisse & Cranberry/Apple Cocktail
I like the idea of the Framboise & Stout, I just checked, don't have any Franboise, but I do have a Bellevue Kriek and Guinness so I'm giving that a try!
FYI - I had remembered this suggestion in the back of my mind, and so when I spotted the Chocolate Stout at the LCBO a few weeks ago, I picked some up, and some Mort Subite Framboise, tried the mix over the weekend, and it was OUTSTANDING! Strongly recommended... I found it quite similar to Black Oak's Double Chocolate Cherry Stout, but obviously raspberry instead of cherry...esprit wrote:Not that anyone has it, but Rogue Chocolate Stout and Mort Subite Framboise is a killer dessert beer.
Technique-wise, I used an English-style pint glass, poured in about 4 oz of Framboise, straight down the middle so I had a good 1-2" of foamy raspberry head, then filled it up, poured the Stout down the side so it slipped in underneath, so with each taste, you had the raspberry aroma and the awesome chocolate/raspberry flavors... Really yummy, and perfect for sharing!
