Nov 3rd - Perry Mason was kind enough to meet with us a while and chat at Caffé Volo this evening before bestowing upon us the precious goods, his long-anticipated and first-ever Russian Imperial Stout.
It's pretty perfect as far as any beer goes; if you are sitting on the fence about getting some, it might be advisable to move on it now. I don't think it will be around long if there are cases for sale.
Thanks to Ralph the host and owner of the joint; and obviously thanks to Perry for the amazing effort. You gotta appreciate Perry's vision and unflagging enthusiasm for cool styles of beer, and also Ralph's superior appreciation of the concept, 'beer haven.' (Heaven?) A kudos to each of these guys.
Also - nice to meet some of you BT'ers, you seem like a good bunch.
Immediately TK RIS is clearly a tasty, pleasantly strong-flavored, and balanced 9% stout, with a rather lengthy, refined finish. I'm pretty sure light does not penetrate this ebony elixir. It must have a LOT of good stuff in there to give it this concentration and finish, and dense black look.
Perry can be a proud Tsar today.

Tsarina Katarina Imperial Stout - November
It's been a long time coming, but local Ontario brewing extremist, Perry Mason of the Scotch Irish Brewing Company, finally released his Tsarina Katarina Imperial Stout this month. And it may just be his most wonderfully "out there" creation yet.
Crafted very much in the British tradition of thick and oily strong stouts, rather than the more modern, sweeter Imperial style typified by North Coast Brewing's extraordinary Old Rasputin Imperial Russian Stout, the Tsarina pours thick and pitch black. The aroma follows suit, with burnt plum and unsweetened black licorice notes dominant, followed by hints of espresso and a faint though appealing hint of tar.
On the palate, the oily richness of the stout continues apace, with a light licorice sweetness quickly giving way to more pronounced flavours of well-roasted coffee bean, raw cocoa, less sweet licorice and prune. The beer's formidable 9% alcohol, however, doesn't really make an impact until the very end, when it sends a waft of warmth coursing down the back of the throat and up the spine. Yes, it may have been a long time coming, but Tsarina Katarina was well worth the wait.
