So you're all telling me that with all the breweries that have closed recently because of the economics of it all, that no, that's not Innocente's case. For Innocente it's because they were against the mask mandate (2021) and supported the freedom convoy (2022), that's why they closed... three years later.distr0 wrote: ↑Tue May 20, 2025 10:39 amMatttthewGeorge wrote: ↑Tue May 20, 2025 10:35 amAll the other breweries that went out of business did so because of the economy, but Innocente it's because he's right wing.
Silly statement.
"right wing" is quite the understatement. some of the stuff he was posting on the *business* social accounts was absolutely unhinged. I think quite a large number of people lost interest in ever supporting them again, myself included. I don't think it's a silly statement at all.

I used to sell beer. Now I don't.
things can have more than 1 reason or cause. i'm just saying that i've seen/heard/read stories and posts from a TON of people who went from being regular customers to completely and actively avoiding all innocente products because of his beliefs and actions. didn't his business partner and *brother* also leave the business because of it? and didn't he also have a gofundme-style fundraiser a year or more ago because they were already out of money then?MatttthewGeorge wrote: ↑Tue May 20, 2025 12:32 pmSo you're all telling me that with all the breweries that have closed recently because of the economics of it all, that no, that's not Innocente's case. if there were 12 reasons that this business failed, 'right wing' in a nutshell would encapsulate at least 8 of them

I don't know if Steve's politics contributed to the closing, and neither does anyone else. Many other breweries have closed in the last few years and it seems to me assumptions are being made in this one case based on biases. If Innocente had lost as many customers as is being suggested, I don't know how they've lasted as long as they did. It's possible he gained just as many people as he lost due to his politics, we'll never know. Because we can't equate the closing of the brewery to his politics, only to the fact that the brewery wasn't making money. Like every other brewery that has closed.
But to clear up some things:
1. He business partners were his parents, who he bought out, mainly due to them being upset that...
2. He fired his brother, who was underperforming in sales.
3. He did have a gofundme campaign, as have others who have since closed. I'm not sure if there's been a brewery "saved" by this method (interesting sidebar)

I'm sure you are correct and the reasons are more varied and complex. I think what we have here is a bit of wishful projection. Some or many of us who find this person's views disagreeable, probably want to think that's what sunk him. It may have, or we could just be having our schadenfreude moment. Regardless, it appears those who knew his views and found them distasteful, likely withdrew their patronage and that would have had some impact.MatttthewGeorge wrote: ↑Wed May 21, 2025 12:32 pmdistr0 wrote: ↑Tue May 20, 2025 4:24 pmthings can have more than 1 reason or cause. i'm just saying that i've seen/heard/read stories and posts from a TON of people who went from being regular customers to completely and actively avoiding all innocente products because of his beliefs and actions. didn't his business partner and *brother* also leave the business because of it? and didn't he also have a gofundme-style fundraiser a year or more ago because they were already out of money then?MatttthewGeorge wrote: ↑Tue May 20, 2025 12:32 pm

It's likely also impacted by the fact that the craft beer scene is such a community and abhorrent behaviour doesn't sit well. Not exactly the same thing, but there have been some bad actors in the brewing and bar scene especially as it comes to sexual misconduct. I for one, miss some of the great beers and tap rooms, but won't play along with that crap.

Feels like Goose Island Toronto is dead man walking at this point. I stopped by tonight and they weren't seating anyone in the GI space, only at the Bier Markt side and being able to order from the GI menu.
Not saying I'm rooting hard for them, but they have a fair bit of localization and a decent delivery zone.
If they went fully micro, Canadian, and a new strategy I could see a Canada Goose Island being good.
I've always liked Goose Island and I hope they can make it. I see on their IG they have shortened their hours and their retail isn't open on Mondays or Tuesdays. No mention of the taproom.
Cass is pretty much the only person I know of who ever goes there. It's amazing how little hype they managed to generate with their Canadian operations.
No argument there. I was curious so I looked on their site and outside of Chicago, their only other international locations are Shanghai, Seoul and Sao Paolo. Toronto kind of feels like a weird outlier.

Goose Island I sometimes go for Saturday lunches, it's one of the rarer brewery patios that I can also get food at with my dog. Patio usually starts to fill up early afternoon, but I have yet to go this patio season to see if traffic dipped.
