Gatineau - bottle purchases

Post by midlife crisis »

I'll be in the Ottawa area soon and am planning to hit La Trappe a Fromage and/or Marche Jovi to pick up some Quebec micro treats. What are the must buys these days, with emphasis (but not exclusively) on IPA/IIPA type brews? I know DDC is now bottling, and plan to get some Corne de Diable, but I'm not familiar with any other Quebec micros except Unibroue. Also keen to try various styles of course, such as stouts, tripels, etc, if there are recommendations. For instance I've heard of Trois Mousquetaires but know nothing of their beers.

I was at La Trappe this past weekend. They have some winter seasonals left over, so you might pick up a few bottles of Unibroue 17 to put away.

I was just there and got some Peche Mortel, Corne du Diable, ROse de Hibiscus and ROute Des Epicees. I also got some bieropholie calumet grand chef and other Quebec treats.

On an off topic note, I dined in some mighty establishments while in Ottawa.......Preston Street has a lot to offer, the Italian cuisine is fantastic in a lot of these places.

I also ate at a place in little china (where I was staying) called Neu Me Fung. Simply fantastic Viet. food.

I love the beers from Charlevoix, especially the Dominus Vobiscum line. I've seen some of them at these locations.

Can one actually buy beer at Bieropholie? Or do you have to private order?

There are two sides to this club:
1) private ordering
2) brewing

For the first, you need to become a member of the club to order beers that are delivered to a local SAQ 4-6 months later. For the second, you need to find a good depanneur or store like Marche Jovi or La Trappe a Fromage.

Instead of starting a 3rd Gatineau/Hull thread I'll jump on this one...
I'll be in Ottawa next weekend and have time to hop over to HUll / Gatineau area.

First off - does anyone know if there are any of the Unibroue 400 beers to be found in the area still? It would make the perfect gift for a buddy of mine.

Secondly - anyone been lately and know of any Xmas / Holiday packs in Quebec not found here?

Cheers!

Beauty. Thanks for the info.
I discovered that SAQ has a Floreffe gift pack at the SAQ as well....so I may have to venture into one of those in the area too.
A report to come upon my return.

Your time would be better spent popping out to Bistro l'Autre Oeil in Aylmer. They have Struise Pannepot, Struiselensis and 5 or 6 Rogue beers available. Not to mention Dieu Du Ciel's Corne Du Diable on tap.

Returned from my jaunt into Ottawa and hop over for beer in Gatineau. This was my first such trip, and admittedly I was pretty overwhelmed with the variety of Quebec and French beers available, many which I hadn't heard about. So, wit hthe exception of the Unibroue and 1/2 meter beer pack, everything else was picked up based on what I heard here or jsut "on a whim". I could have easily picked up twice as much.

One thing I saw at Marce Jovi was they were giving away a free 750ml Unibroue if you bought a 12-pack. Pretty cool.

Below is what I picked up. As for availability, both Marche Jovi and La Trappe a Fromage had piles of DDC 6-packs as well as plenty of Unibroue, La Barberie, 3 Mosquitaires and a whack of others I never heard of. (next time I'll do some research)

Also - I was amazed and annoyed by just how close Marche Jovi was to Gatineau Park - walking distance! I've camped there in the past, without knowing of Jovi and definitely will be planning a beer camping trip this coming summer. My trip had 3 stops....

1 - SAQ in Hull, near the Casino on Boulevard de la Carriere
Seemingly recently renovated or something...very nice layout and plenty of beer. Also some great wines - I got a Zuccardi "Q" Malbec 2006, my favourite Malbec from when I was in Argentina...but never available at LCBO AFAIK.

Beers from SAQ:
1/2 meter "Belgian Beer Paradise" gift pack from Brasserie Lefebvre. Includes 8 bottles: barbar, newton, floreffe prima melior, floreffe dubbel, floreffe triple, forleffe blonde, belgian kriek and blanche du bruxelles.

- An extra floreffe dubbel (one of my faves)
- Floreffe 750ml bomber,
- Mc Chouffe Brune
- Duchesse de Bourgogne

#2 - La Trappe a Fromage - 200 Rue Bellehumeur, Gatineau
Cool spot. I managed to also pick up some tasty jams and other treats for Xmas gifts. This is where I got most of my beers. I wanted to get some DDC or other glassware but felt they werre expensive at $13-20 per glass.

Beers from La Trappe:
- Snoreau spicy beer from Brassuers RJ (description sounded good)
- Barbar Honey Ale
- Unibroue Don De Dieu
- Charlevoix Dominus Vobiscum Double
- Unibroue 17
- Les Trois Mousquetaires Baltic Porter
- Les Trois Mousquetaires Oktoberfest Rousse
- Unibroue Quatre-Centieme
- 6 pack of Dieu du Ciel Peche Mortel

#3 - March Jovi - 50 Rue Bégin, Gatineau
The prices here seemed a bit more reasonable than La Trappe. They had a bunch of new fruit beers and some interesting giftpacks of beers from France. I did not pick up much here as I was already "spent" in terms of budget.

Beers from Jovi:
- Goliath cognac beer
- Brassin D'Hiver from France
- Saint Arnould La Noblesse
- Imperial IPa from Microbrasserie du Lievre

Haven't had either Les Trois Mousquetaires brew yet. The next week will be a busy one though on the beer front...starting tomorrow!
