How to clean an old carboy?

Post by phirleh »

After visiting my parent's house on the holidays, I grabbed my dad's 20 year old 5 gallon carboy he used for winemaking. Any suggestions as to what's the best way to clean off 2 decades of disuse?

Bleach - straight from the jug. Just swirl it around

1. Carboy brush, hot water and dish soap
2. Rinse
3. 24 hour soak with sani-brew (the pink stuff)
4. Rinse

If you end up having trouble with either of those methods, go to the pharmacy or chemical supplier and get some crystal lye, mix er' with water and let it soak for 24 hours.
