Commercial Yeast

Post by cannondale »

For those who have experience culturing commercial yeast strains from their favourite bottles, is it worth the effort? What sort of results have you gotten, and what are some of the better candidates from which to harvest yeast?

I've done it with Hoegaarden with some reasonable results. I haven't done it enough though to say conclusively.

Do keep in mind, however, that some bottle conditioned beers use different yeasts for priming than for primary fermentation. Tends to be more common on higher alcohol beers.

Twice I have tried to get the Alesmith IPA yeast to start up again but to no avail.

Just got my hands on 7 new bottles, I will keep trying because the end result could be wonderful.

Also heard it was quite feasible with SNPA.

Substitute "Schneiders" for "Hoegaarden".
