Beer Fads Summer 2010

Post by Ukie »

I always wonder when we get to this time of the year what the latest sought after mass market beer will be. In 2009 it was Bud Light, 2008 it was Dos Equis. This year it looks like Miller Chill. I was taking back some empties and they were just adding it to the leader board. Supposedly it is a remake of the Miller Chelada, 4%, 100 cal and 4 gm carbo. I tried the Chelada a few years back on a hot summer day in Port Huron and found it boring. Usually on a hot summer day I can drink just about anything this was just uninspiring, maybe this new stuff is better.

Say something if you tried it.

I suspect you were on an excursion in the Antarctic and missed last years lime fiasco. It was as omnipresent as it was revolting.

I personally don't believe Miller has enough gumption to pull off anything this year but perhaps they are through the reorganization of the marketing department as SAB/Miller/Coors/Molson and they will grab onto the Molson 'microcarbonization' as the next new thing.

It has done absolutely zero here to this point and deservedly so.

I shouldn't speak for the original poster, but I suspect he simply missed writing the word lime when he wrote "in 2009 it was Bud Light". I'm pretty sure Brick sent some Red Baron Lime to the Antarctic after they learned of the Bud Light Lime shortage.

For my money, I can't think of a time when Bud Light (just plain old Bud Light) was ever all that popular in this province (certainly not like it is in the States, anyhow). When I worked at The Beer Store, and whenever there was a promotion on it, Labatt's would send it to us by the palate. We always had to send at least three quarters of it back old code. It never sold well at the retail level (bars, for obvious reasons, may be a different story...)

Molson did some test marketing of Miller Chill in one or two of the prairie provinces late last summer, just at the tail end of the line beer craze. I guess they figure there will be enough of a demand for lime beer this coming summer to give it an Ontario roll-out.

Also hoping that the craze comes back is Labatt USA, who has recently launched Labatt Blue Light Lime in the US, brewing it at High Falls (aka Genesee) Brewery in Rochester.

Keystone and Keystone Light are new in Canada.

Ultra light beers also seem to be making a comeback this summer - Molson 67, MGD 64, Bud 66, etc... sorta makes the lime beers sound good.

Yes you are quite right, I meant Bud Light Lime. Also, I forgot to mention that Big Rock Lime rolls out on May 10th from what I have been told, having missed the Labour day launch. I also have been told that some restaurants already have it.

I was just about to chime in with some wisecrack when I thought - I can't believe we are even f*ckin talking about this crap! Let's get back to discussing beer folks!

Perhaps some disagree. Maybe we can start a forum called Soda Fountain Towel or something to discuss various crap liquids sold by volume.

Sorry, let me retract the last post. I didn't intend to be such a total snob.

Clear beer in the UK.

Molson Coors to launch 'clear beer for women'

The woman on the left is 'clearly' enjoying her clear beer.

Here is a well done analysis:

I guess "slightly metallic taste" will be the big one.

I agree. It's probably an artifact from the time when only crap beer was available in cans. I bet other than the BPA, cans are probably better for the beer. For instance no UV.
