an event I'd like to see

The wife & I were down at the Distillery today for the art exhibition, and we found a little chocolatier there called Soma Chocolates. Normally, we don't get too excited about these sort of places, as most of them specialize in truffles and other chocolate covered thingies that Sheryl makes cheaper (& usually better) at home.

This place had plenty of that sort of stuff, but with the twist that unlike many chocolatiers that use generic & blended chocolates, they use some seriously high-end, single-plantation chocolates from around the world - basically the chocolate version of single-malt scotch or a good quality microbrew.

In addition, they sell bars from some world-renowned gourmet chocolatiers such as Domori, Valrhona and El Rey, many of which we'd never seen in Toronto before. Like their equivalents in the scotch world, they ain't cheap - we dropped nearly 20 bucks for two medium sized bars - but if you have a taste for good chocolate, they're definately worth the money.

Anyway, my point in bringing this up is that I'd love to see somewhere like beerbistro put together a beer & chocolate tasting, matching up some good chocolate-friendly beers (like stouts & porters) with some high quality chocolate. Not only would it be a unique beer event, but I'd lay odds that it would get a lot more women interested in trying some good beer.

Steve, if you're reading this - think about it. :)

And if there are any other high-end chocolate fans reading this - where do you get your fix? We generally buy our bars at Domino's in St. Lawrence Market, where they have a pretty decent selection of stuff from Michel Cluizel, Dolfin and others, and Soma has enough bars that are new to us to keep us going for a while. But if there are some other places out there with unique stuff available, we'd like to know about it.

Hey Greg:

That's a really good idea.

We had a tasting at my basement bar with beer we bought at Premier,
and chocolate that friends brought back from Belgium,
and it worked very well.

We were at Woofstock and were blown away when we stumbled across
Soma...very $$$ as you said, but great chocolate.

I think Sun Valley Fine Foods on the Danforth has Dolfin.
I'm pretty sure I remember seeing it there and being surprised,
but I can't remember what else they had.

Other than St.Lawrence market, that's the only place I've seen it.

Green aniseed and ginger are my personal faves... :D

It's too bad it's really hard to find chocolate like Dolfin and
Scharffen Berger etc.

When I was in Seattle last year, I picked up alot of really amazing stuff
at a place called Delaurenti Food and Wine near the Pike Market.

They had all the Northwestern beers as well as all the chocolate.

Really wish we had stores like that here. :-?

Cheers

Dave

That is an excellent idea, Greg, and it's been quite some time since I last hosted a beer and chocolate tasting. I'll look into the possibility of doing something along those lines in the fall.

Glad you think it's a good idea. And the fall sounds like a perfect time for such an event. If/when it happens, I'll see you there!
